General Motors says its plans for new engines and transmissions will result in 50 new engine variants and 10 new six-speed automatic transmission variants in the next few years. The company told journalists assembled inFrance on a background event that the engines would include a new turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 that will show up in the 2006 Saab 9-3, and will produce 250 hp of power and 258 lb-ft of torque. The new engine will be produced at Holden's Port Melbourne engine plant, where the related 3.6-liter version of the V-6 is made. GM also has plans for a new 5.3-liter V-8 engine developed specifically for front-drive applications; the transverse V-8 will put out 290 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. The new six-speed transmissions will include gearboxes made for both front- and rear-wheel drive; GM says that by 2008 it will be producing more than one million six-speed transmissions per year. That doesn't seem that unreasonable, stock LS1 is 5.7L & doesn't get that much more than that, especially in low level configurations (Z28).

And Caddy went from FWD to RWD with their new STS. If a sedan is large enough to be able to handle a V8 transversely, it should be RWD anyway.

A tranversely mounted V8 and RWD doesn't add up. Maybe that was not the point of your post.

A tranversely mounted V8 and RWD doesn't add up. Maybe that was not the point of your post.

The point of my post is that if a sedan is large enough to handle a V8 transversely (meaning wide enough to accept the V8 transversely and then long enough to balance out the proportions of the car), then it should be RWD (longitudinal) in the first place.

Big Car/V8 = RWD IMHO. Even Cadillac is putting the new Deville on a RWD Sigma chassis

The only, and I mean ONLY, reason they put a 6-cyl in the SAAB was the US market. Here a 6-cyl > 4-cyl not matter what. Prestige brands 'require' +6 cylinder engines in the US.

Some wierd stigma of turbo's.

Chrysler did them well in the early 90's 🙂
