Gm recalls another 7.6 million vehicles, models going back to 1997

Fuck you GM.

And what is with that recall table? There were two different Malibu's made and sold in 2005... The Malibu Classic and the new for 2005 Malibu... Are they talking both or just the classic?

We've also had the short issue with the door switches.... But in our Malibu. Wonder if I can petition GM to fix it?

No shit. That makes four recalls on the Malibu so far and no official notification letters from GM... Because they can keep up with the pace of their recalls.

At this point it is pretty fucking comical.

And recalls are up across the board, its not just GM.
Its NOW better to recall then to not. Toyota was the first to get hit with the stricter standards and now all other makers are recalling in advance. 2014 will have the most recalled cars from all makers in history.

The "passlock" ignition system has been a known problem for years, the biggest issues facing any '97-'04 GM V6 were the lower intake manifolds gaskets that went out and a lot of times the owner didn't know he/she was contaminating the engine oil with coolant until it was too late. Sadly many a 3800 V6 dies a very premature death as they were a rock-solid engine otherwise..

No, the "classic" Malibu became a rental or fleet vehicle starting in '04 when the newer model came out in '04, they do not share the same ignition systems. Both Wacky Dan and myself own n the "new" style '05's and neither of us has received anything from GM about when they will actually start working on these cars..

This is funny because I remember calling the ignition lock recall dumb, and saying something along the lines of 'LOL, they've had shitty ignition locks for DECADES...should they just recall EVERYTHING?'

Erm..eh...yup; I guess that's the route they went.

Still retarded, though. Cars break. Especially cars that are 15+ years old. And these ignition lock failure DO NOT happen suddenly. People have tons of warning that the lock is not working quite right and is about to eat shit.

Plenty of other manufacturers have repeat ignition lock failures. Hyundai and VW both come to mind as common ones. No recalls there. I'm growing weary of this nanny state bullshit. Just recall every car ever made because at some point, a part will fail in a way that could be dangerous, especially if a moronic owner ignores obvious symptoms.

I've seen you make this statement before and it is utterly false. I owned a GM car from 1997, 1998, my sister from 2001, and now my nephew from 2000. All Grand Prix cars, all good vehicles. Reliable, decent mpg, roomy, comfortable, and good looking.

I used to rent those pieces of crap. I have plenty of experience with GM cars.

Well that and their tendency to light on fire (re: valve cover seal recall, oil + exhaust manifold = excitement.)

We used to rent Cobalts out and every single one of them had bad ignitions. They'd all rattle in the front end too, which would freak out the customers. They rank fairly high in my personal worst cars of all time list. There's a reason its predecessor was called the Cadavalier. Yet there's still a lot of them on the road. I don't think much got changed when they moved to the Delta Platform.

I think the reason for the recalls is to try and avoid any potential lawsuits. Probably works out cheaper than having to fight a class action. Manufacturers are only legally obligated by the NHTSA to fix all vehicles dating back to ten years before the recall date. So it's a goodwill gesture on their part.

you just had to push it that much further... I'm sure there are a couple that have been reliable, decent MPG... ok I can go with that, roomy? sure, comfortable, not worth arguing, but good looking? not a chance.

I can stereotype the typical grand prix driver.... yeah, they think their cars are much better than they actually are.

this whole recall thing is a joke in some regards. every since the toyota recall situation, these things have gotten out of hand. in this situation, it's a joke they took till now to recall cars from 97... though I agree, how many are really still on the road 😉
