This is interesting to know.

I have the 3.8L in my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. Hasn't caught on fire. . . yet.

OH GOD PEOPLE!!!
There is nothing really wrong with the cars. When cars get old they might leak oil. As such there seems to be a place it could pool and then spill, due to hard braking, and maybe catch fire.

I have seen a lot of cars smoke and even had some catch small fires due to oil leaks. Had to replace a cam cover gasket on a 944 as a little leak that could not even be seen caused a fire. The gasket had a very small opening and that was enough.

The problem here is these cars are FWD so if the front head is leaking any oil and you brake hard it will push/fling it forward to the exhust manifold and run down toward the sprak plugs. You even see that they are only replacing some spark plug wire retainers. So they will not fix your old car if it is leaking, just fix where the oil leaks to.

I just meant how are these people going to get this repair done

.

It's ok....it is the mindset of people now they need to be taken care of forever, recalling a product that is 12 yrs old is ridiculous.

Fix your oil leak, don't worry. I've had leaks that slowly dripped on the mainfolds for years and never a fire. But there is also a reason that I carry a fire extinguisher, as you never know what is goign to happen.

This just in: seeping engine fluids on hot things can burn. News at 11.

Update: engines also get dirty and greasy and can get really hot and pose a hazzard! Recall incoming!

Update2: engines leak things when they have 100,000 miles on them and aren't maintained. Most still do even if perfectly maintained.

Update3: 60 min special: gasoline is flammable and dangerous around sparks.

Fucking sheep I swear.

Ouch, bad timing for them to have to pay for this. Sounds like a cheap fix, at least.

Well, in the case of my car, it involved taking part of the engine off, removing an old very large gasket, and putting in a new one. All told, it's a rubber gasket and probably an hour of labor. Doesn't sound like exactly the same repair listed, but the leaking oil is similar.

Louisss, stop trolling, honestly, it is getting very old.
i'm just letting GM know that this recall wasn't so bad.

Is that because it isn't as bad as Toyota recalling their trucks which break in half?

this thread is about GM recalling. stick to the topic noob

There's the old saying about the pot calling the kettle black.

As soon as someone brings up something that you don't want to hear that you have no response for (intelligent or otherwise, usually otherwise) you say that we're changing topics. Whenever some thread comes up about something else you can rant and rave about whatever you want. Seems like a bit of a double standard, doesn't it?

wtf. this news comes out a day after i buy 1000 shares of GM stock. hopefully they dont tank just yet 🙂 i can still make a few hundred bucks

no, if you're going to argue something, argue it on topic. this topic is GM Recalling their older cars.

What really needs to be fixed is replace the Valve Covers with metal ones, instead of that shit plastic and also new Valve Cover Gaskets. Then you will not have an oil leak and nothing to be worried about. Best advice, keep an eye on the valve covers, especially the front one where you add the engine oil for leaks. If you see any fix it. Not hard to get to the front one. Back one is a little hard to get to. And I own a 1999 Grand Prix with the 3800 NA Vin K motor

What kind of 3800 do you have that has plastic valve covers? My 3800 in my Camaro has metal 😕

Metal ones can still leak though. Old taurus leaked around the valve covers. Gaskets get old and leak regardless of valve cover material.

I have the 3800 Vin K 1999 model ... I was under the belief they were plastic by reading on a gp forum. Perhaps they are metal, in which case, it would only need gaskets replaced. They do look like plastic.
