Of all the rumors going around with Chryslyer going under and merging. GM is likey to go under, and Ford just skimming by. I would never thought they would actuallly leave. It do the impossible, destroy a dedtroyed city. I wouldn't put much faith in the article or this actually happning but the thought has been put out there. Story Link

It won't happen, companies often do this sort of thing where they'll talk about relocating to try and get incentives from local and state governments to stay put. It sounds like they're putting out some rumors so they can get save some money.

Yikes...things could really get scary in Detroit if GM were to leave. I'd heartly welcome them if they want to relocate to Greenville, SC though...we already have BMW as well as a Automotive research center here...wouldn't hurt to have GM as well.

Bail? I think a likely scenario is that they will keep a few plants and sell the rest of the companies assets. I don't see any demand for manufacturing capacity, so my guess is that they will be sold for scrap value. Demolish the plant and you can sell the materials kind of thing.

The Obama administration has it's eyes on GM in a big way. They see GM as their bitch. A company they can tell what to build, when to build it and how much to charge. LOL at you guys and the GM HQ move. All they're saying is that they would be willing to move if it would be best for the company. They've said that they've talked about, it's an option if it would make sense and they'd do it if needed - nothing more. If they should decide to do so, good luck selling their headquarters. It's not like commercial real estate is in demand in Michigan.

The idea that the UAW has the power to control from what location GM conducts their business is ludicrous.

My thoughts would be that with the changes the Obama administration wants to make concerning large corporations, that it would make good business sense to base the company overseas. The administration wants corporations that conduct business outside of the country to pay taxes to both the country where their products and services are sold and to pay taxes on those same goods or services here in the U.S. No other country in the world does this. You've got to roll with the punches. If that's what the administration gets, you'll see far more corporations than GM leaving our shores.

Who cares? The whole city is an armpit - It was built on shaky UAW deals - good riddance.

Where is it written that any city has a RIGHT to exist?

Shit happens - move on, and quit whining.

That's actually the kind of bail I meant. Get what they want or need, and what cash they can generate, and then move on. Leaving the bones drying in the breeze.

I think this was brought on by the mayor of Warren suggesting that moving their headquarters staff to their tech center would be a way to save money.

I bet there are a lot of homes right within the confines of the city, that you couldn't afford to buy even with prices being depressed by 50% in these economic times and I'm not talking about suburbs.

Automotive News reported (in the past day or two) that GM was evaluating their options for the world headquarters.
Then today, they announced GM will be importing ~20000 cars from China (Buicks, I assume) in 2011, and as many as 50k by 2014

Maybe GM will be moving their headquarters to Shanghai

Nope. You're thinking of Grosse Point... beyond city limits. Having a Detroit mailing address severely depresses RE values.*

The only exception is indian village (by belle isle) and even there people are taking baths on their properties. great story

they're gonna take your tax money and laugh all the way to mexico, while still making commercials that guilt you into buying their cars out of patriotic duty!

Houses are sitting vacant and vanadlized because they can't sell them for a dollar.
