Chinese manufacturing helped bring us to the era of $300 40" HDTV's and $250 laptops. Maybe they'll bring us to the era of the $15,000 brand new SUV as well... but I doubt it.

Their light-duty can openers are terrible. Light, weak steel that cannot puncture the can deep enough and catch the lip. But the almost 20-30 year old can opener that has been in my family works perfectly to this day. Ecko miracle can opener 885. Google it.

$250 laptops did not exist until Chromebooks were pumped out. Even netbooks were above $300 and before then, nothing was really there at the 300 dollar price point.

People have low standards for TV picture quality and hence they buy the cheapest TV they can find.

Just my two cents.

Even when a was an apprentice in a tool shop in the mid 80's that is now shuttered in Indiana, it was pretty closely affiliated with making GM and various other companies assembly lines.

Even Volkswagen and a few others.

We made some things for Cadillac that were sent to Mexico even then, the machines at the time were sent back for repair as they broke the trying to operate them and had no idea how to fix the things.

The local GM guys had a fit when they found out about that when it was leaked that those had been out sourced to send there to begin with.

Anyways, that whole area is pretty much a desert of manufacturing compared to what it used to be.

Just one been around awhile.

General Motors is becoming China Motors

Nothing really much to see in the thread, even Aerospace companies are doing this and I'm more worried about what things are being leaked there ATM.

i'm guessing if people will buy a chinese and very well made iphone, they will buy a chinese made buick if its made to the same standards.

i think the new volvo s60 is going to be from china too.

its not like chinese manufacturing could be worse than american manufacturing. the mercedes C class was just moved over to the american plant, and it probably had the worst first year defects of any mercedes in a long while. bleeding seats, taillight misalignments etc.

and from what i remember my american made 2013 moto x had all sorts of cosmetic defects that the asian made international model i also had did not (anecdotal i know, but it was by far the most poorly put together and cosmetically defective motorola phone i've ever had out of many phones from motorola it is the only american made one)

highly doubt it. the manufacturing cost of a car is a pretty small amount of the total cost. plus they still have to ship it. its not like steel costs less in china. buick's largest market by far is china, so it makes sense for them to just build them all there.

So what? Everything is made in China now.

iPhones, LED TVs, cars, clothing, pretty much everything else.

Those who claim to only buy "made in USA" are delusional. In this time of globalization, nothing is 100% made in one country. If you see that advertised, then they are lying to you.

What a stupid argument. I shouldn't care where a $30,000 car is made because China already makes all of our $15 pants.

If I have a choice I will buy American. A foreign car brand made in the US is a legit alternative, but not the first choice.

I didn't say that the car wasn't going to any less crappy than a $250 laptop or a $300 TV... I'm just hoping that it's going to be cheaper :)

buy american, buy honda, and toyota, and bmw, and mercedes, and hyundai etc... I'll simply just stick with buying any non-GM / chrysler product ( although cts and ats are pretty nice... hmmm)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chery

Chinese car company famous for making knock-offs of other 'real' cars and ripping-off their designs almost exactly.

hell even their name is a knock off of chevy

Not a chance since Buicks is supposed to be "upscale" and will be priced accordingly.

My coworkers showed me some interesting reports on Chinese car quality. It was similar to Consumer reports and taken among the many companies in China. Basically what it shows is,

Foreign built cars: 90 issues per 100 cars
Foreign owned Chinese made cars: 95 issues per 100 cars
Joint-Venture Chinese cars (something like Chang-An/Ford): 105 issues per 100 cars
Chinese owned Car factory: 250-400 issues per 100 cars. (this was about same level as Land-Rover/Jaguar,

These numbers arent accurate and i pulled them out of my butt, but the report showed that if Chinese cars are made with Foreign input, they're about as good as a foreign made car, and if it has no foreign input, it will suck.

Anyways, I see lots of Chinese made cars every day and they work perfectly fine. Even Chery, Geely, Chang-An are capable of making nice quality cars that could easily blend into any western market, and they aren't rip-offs of western cars like people would have you believe. They copy no more than any other company does and most of the copy comes from the joint-venture they have (ex: ChangAn Eado XT looks a bit like a Focus)

I thought caddy was upscale, buick is kinda stuck in the middle.

It's a matter of semantics, and upscale is quite the slippery word. Buicks are supposed to be nicer than the economy brands, but not quite full-on luxury as Cadillac, and are priced accordingly.

Did anyone read the article?

They have been making that car in China for the last year. 140k units produced. Why would you tool up another plant to make a car for another market? Why not just export it?

Big manufacturers frequently have multiple plants creating the same car for regional markets. That isn't unusual. It just depends on how many they expect to sell. This probably won't sell enough to justify another facility in the US. It being built in China will guarantee mediocre sales.

I was more seeking to point out to the detractors that this is a plant made to produce cars for China. Of course regional supply is key, especially with the way currency fluctuations have been.
