GM is pissing me off.

Back in 1994, they make the beautiful Impala SS.
The perfect sleeper.
They expected to sell 5000 of them.
When they stopped making them in 1996, they sold OVER 45,000!!!!
9x more than they expected.
Why did they stop?

So they could make more money off selling Tahoe's.

Then in 2000 they come up with the new Impala.
Absolutely brutal, powerless....Aztek like.

The Monte Carlo shouldn't even be called a "SS" (with a 3.8l engine???)

Now This

Sorry GM, I don't know you past 1996.
The year GM died 🙁

GM has never gotten the hang of the car market. They will come out with something that has potential, each year make it a little better, then when it is great cancel it.

With the idiot bean counters running GM anyone can beat them at their own game.

I think when I was a kid they had 55% of the US market. Been going down, down, down.....

That article is so full of speculation that I won't even comment beyond saying that more than half of it is B.S. Of course I'm sure somebody will insist otherwise, but I'm going off of the official internal GM planning guide, which right now runs through 2006. And no I can't post it, there are these rather large words at the top that say CONFIDENTIAL. In fact, I know people who have been fired for leaking info to the car 'rags.

PS. - We threw the bean counters (ie. the Smiths) out a while ago. One remains in a purely token position.

Viperoni - whose crack pipe are you smoking when you say Ford destroyed GM with the LS? The LS was never and WILL NEVER be aimed at GM. Its supposed to compete with the Euros and the better Lexus' and Acura's, not GM. Look through any car magazine and find one that compares the LS to anything but a beamer, Lexus, Acura, or an Audi. GM doesn't have a single car that can compete with the LS.

<< GM doesn't have a single car that can compete with the LS >>

That's exactly what I mean.
If they would have kept the Impala as the car it's supposed to be (big, powerful family sleeper) they would have competition, but this is obviusly not the case.
It would take an Aurora to compete with the LS, and even then!

Actually there were a few C3 (1968-1982) that Greenwood created conversion kits to make them into wagons. I just hope that auto field guide site is a BSing as it sounds.

Have you seen the mercury maruarder , has picks in his ford folder, its going to be pretty sweet. A little late to build a Impala SS killer but a little late is better than never.

Interesting, considering GM is the biggest Company in the world ! I doubt they got that way by doing things wrong !

I'm with you on this one Viperoni. I really liked the old Impala SS...however, the Crown Vic beat the SS in every category...except the great looks it had. Ford went right on upgrading their platform and GM stopped. Too bad as the new Impala and Monte Carlo SUCK big time.

They got that way by buying up other car companies.

Vip - I understand what you mean now, but the Impala SS or the older generation Impala was never meant to go up vs the Beamers - it was just a high performance (albeit, heavy) family sedan, whereas the LS is meant to go up vs the BMW 328 and the such. It's not that great of a performer. (Something like high-mid 15s, 0-60 in the 7 range) If they did, I'm sure Lincoln/Ford would have dropped the Navigator 300 hp 5.4 in there, or the 320 hp Cobra 4.6

That Marauder is hella nice though

Where did they get the money to buy other companies then ?

Ugh!!!

One of my buddy's dad has one of the Impala SS' and boy that thing is a beast. It can haul ass and seat 4 across the back seats. The new "Impala" does not deserve the name. Why doesn't GM just admit that it's just another Lumina. The head designer for the rear of GM cars must be cockeyed. First the Monte Carlo and then the Asstek.

Windogg

The Marauder looks like a Police car, get rid of the chrome wheels, and everyone would drive properly when they saw you.

Can a regular person buy a Crown Vic w/ the Police options, or is that reserved for the actual Police?

You don't need money to buy up other companies. All you need is stock and options.

How else could a crappy little company like Worldcom go and buy a huge company like MCI?

Anyway, there is a pretty interesting commentary on GM in this month's Car and Driver. One editor talks about his frustrations with GM. I have the mag and there is nothing on their website so I can't post it. Sorry.
