GM Green Lights Buick Regal for America

Make it a manual and RWD and it will be the first new Buick I would consider since... ever.

Is it just a rehash of the Saturn Aura?
The Buick Regal is identical to the Opel Insignia. Everybody assumed GM would bring the Insignia to the States as the next generation Aura. After all this, I think it's pretty obvious Saturn isn't getting a new Aura.

For the folks wondering how this compares size-wise to the new Lacrosse:

Buick Lacrosse
Wheelbase (in / mm): 111.7 / 2837
Overall length (in / mm): 197 / 5003
Overall width (in / mm): 73.1 / 1858
Overall height (in / mm): 58.9 / 1497
Track (in / mm): front: 61.5 / 1565 rear: 61.6 / 1587

Curb weight (lb / kg):
CX: 3948 / 1791 (est)
CXL FWD: 4018 / 1822 (est)
CXL AWD: 4199 / 1904 (est)
CXS: 4065 / 1844 (est)

Open Insignia
Wheelbase (in / mm): 107.8 / 2737
Overall length (in / mm): 190.2 / 4830
Overall width (in / mm): 73.1 / 1856
Overall height (in / mm): 59.0 / 1498
Track (in / mm): front: 62.4 / 1585 rear: 62.5 / 1587

Curb weight (lb / kg): 3314 / 1503

Good I think. There is no need for Saturn IMO.

This is awesome news for GM and and for Buick. Lets just hope the buying public is ready to buy a Buick in that segment. Seems like most Buick buyers want something a bit bigger while the younger buyers who would buy something this size are not really looking for a "Buick". Maybe they'll come out with a sporty AWD version for Pontiac with the turbo 2.8L V6 from Saab pushing some extra horsepower.

Ignoring Saturn? Maybe in the 90's, sure. For a while there Saturn had the youngest product line of any mainstream nameplate in the entire car industry. Aura, Astra, Vue, Sky, and Outlook are all <3 years old.

It was the fastest product overhaul I've ever seen. GM completely revamped Saturn's product line top to bottom in 2 years. And they're all good vehicles too.

The problem of course is the vehicles didn't sell as GM hoped. Perhaps the expectation was too high? Or perhaps newer versions of the same car platform, like the Chevy Malibu and Traverse (and soon the new Equinox) killed any kind of momentum the Saturn versions had.

Yes...and from what I read on Auto-blog...it looks like Saturn will be closed or sold off. It is a shame as the brand had potential...and this surge by GM looks to be too late. In reality, it really is for the best for GM. They don't have enough quality cars to cover so many different brands. If you took their various good cars/trucks from various brands and made one big one...you'd actually have a pretty competitive brand (Astra, Cobalt SS, Malibu, G8, CTS, Corvette, Acadia/Enclave, Solstice, Tahoe, Vue, etc.)

That car looks like crap. Seriously, the front end came from Maybach, the sides and back from Lexus, and the interior from an early 2000's BMW. I mean, the only thing Buick about it is the Emblem and that the plate says "Regal" on it. Where's the elements which tell me that this really is a Buick, and not some Thing shat out by an underpaid, tacky design team? Newer cars today don't have the soul older ones have. *sigh*

Did you look at the new Lacrosse? there should be a familiar Buick design cue on it, if u know what you are talking about.

The Dollar Grin has been a fairly steady constant with Buick and as of late they've been bringing back the VentiPorts, but they're dropping the tailights' width and looking too edgy for a Buick. I saw the Lacrosse when it debuted (2006?) and liked it, then I saw the Enclave and now the new Regal, Lucerne, and concept Lacrosse and now I quietly cry. I will admit that my above post is too agressive-sounding, but I'm sad that instead of real innovation, US automakers are just copying foreign carmakers and losing. The Acadia platform is an admittedly well-thought platform, I hate the cars based on it personally (too coddling for me), and if there was some real ideas other that "Copy Someone!" we'd be gaining ground IMO.

The LaCrosse debuted as a 2005 model to pretty much universally negative reviews about it's styling. The ovoid headlights were awkward to some and completely bland/forgetable to others. The Enclave was the first Buick pretty much everybody said they would be gladly seen in. The new LaCrosse is getting equally positive praise.

You liked the previous LaCrosse? Do you own one? No? Neither does anybody else. That's why this restyle is so desperately needed.

If you want original, in your face, you know what it is from a mile away... well... uh... go look at... uh.. errr.... OH YEA, CADILLAC....

and no, not the dollar grin, that has been around for a while, there is another styling cue on the sides of the LaCrosse, the sweep spear

Seriously, how long have we been asking for this?

I had a 98 Regal GS with Supercharger it was just an awful car. Fell apart totally before 70,000 miles.

All four windows stopped working cables broke or got tangled
climate control computer need to be replaced twice @ $700 ea
leather feel apart
steering wheel feel apart
interor lighitng stopped working
oil leaks and burned oil
at ~70K I sold it for $900 to scrap yard

Basically worst car I ever owned.

It will take a lot to get me back into a Buick
