Now this begs the question, what happens to all existing GM vehicle owners if they do go down, in terms of service and parts availability?

This doens't beg any question - if you had any understanding of economics and our government, you'd understand that even if GM filled for Bankruptcy, the government will support them. You would see no disruption in anything that GM provides.
A LARGE part of our economy is supported by GM, you don't understand waht we'd loose if they were gone.

GM won't go under
A major restructure yes, gov't bailout probably, they still sell more cars than anybody, so if everybody else has better quality and better looking cars how come GM is number one worldwide? 9 million cars to Toyotas 8 million. . . yes that is likely to change in less than 5 yrs, regardless they still sell a crapload of vehicles
"it is losing ground to Asian rivals unencumbered by huge legacy costs"
There is the problem.
I don't know how they fix that part, but Nissan almost went under 6 years ago Renault bought them saved their arses hired Carlos Gohen to run the company turned it around and are now the most profitable company per car sold, outsell Renault and have a 4 million cars per yr market share.
It can be done

Actually - the margin is closing - Toyota is expected to possibly grab #1 car maker in the world this year.

GM should fire all the engineers for desgining the crap they put out. If GM wants to survive they should be trying to steal Toyota's or Honda's engineers!
AMEN!! now maybe they will get some decent designers. I love Chevys but can think of only a couple of products that I like (SSR, Trailblazer) the rest look like crap.

Well unfortunately for GM, SUV's are the only product that generates any money for them which is why they've been losing so much of it

not true.
they have the #3 selling Entry level Sedan, #3 selling Midsize car, #1 selling SUV, and quite a few other high sales number vehicles.

The part in bold is absolutely incorrect.
In the August 13, 1996 issue, a recent article entitled "Kentucky Plant Workers are Cranking Out Good Ideas", Robert Lee Rose, Staff Reporter, writes....
"Jason Moncer has earned a nickname at a Johnson Controls Incorporated auto-parts factory in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Co-workers call him Mr. Kaizen, a reference to the Japanese word for continuous improvement. In June alone, Mr. Moncer came up with 30 suggestions for improving the plant. "I go on sprees," says the 21-year-old, whose latest ideas involve better ways to organize the metal seat components in his work area before he and others insert them into the foam used to make car seats.
In factories across the country, workers are suggesting ways to make their companies more efficient. But nowhere is the art practiced better than at Johnson Control's FoaMech factory, a key supplier to Toyota Motor Corporation's auto assembly plant in Georgetown. Out of 631 employee suggestions last year, the company found 221 good enough to implement. It says that each of the 230 workers provided at least one suggestion, either individually or as part of a team.
By saving money for the company workers improve their collective chances of getting bonuses at the same time they work toward individual awards. Mr. Moncer, for example, is saving up "FoaMech Perks" to get a large screen TV.

Unfortunately GM's white collar workers are responsible for the boring crap they churn out so they are starting to feel the crunch too.

Americans love big cars, for example SUVs, with big engines. Detroit builds them and makes big profits. When the price of gas goes up Americans stop buying large cars and Detroit loses money.
Firing engineers is not going to change the kind or the quality of the cars Detroit builds. Only replacing upper management and changing the Detroit's culture will do that.
