I'd take a Mazda 3 hatch over a Vibe/Matrix.

There really isn't anything I'd want from GM in that price range save a loss leader Equinox or a Vue w/ the 3.5L outsourced V6 from Honda.

Otherwise there are simply better cars out there for the money.

like i said in my post i think you can opt for a 4-speed auto, but taht is on the matrix... and yes im 100% sure that is an XRS.

check with GM and see if you can order an auto.

*** or if you can wait and throw practicality out of the window... the one american new car that i actually think looks GREAT is the solstice... rear wheel drive convertible with 18" wheels... promised to be AROUND $20k...

by the way do you get 20% off MSRP??? if it's MSRP then it's not that mush of a bargain anymore... the MSRP of a vibe is $17690 and $16240 for a matrix XR... american car companies always exaggerate the MSRP...

basically you automatically get the car at invoice price, and then you get all the incentives etc. its no hassle, no bargaining etc.

The Vibe is a a good car, I've seen some 04 Malibu that are being sold at 15K with all the options you need, AC, CD, and power windows. GM cars are reliable, but they depreciate really fast, there are plenty of good deals out there for buyers, not so good if you try to sell it later.

Do you also get any rebate or other offer that might be on the car? 15% to 20% off some cheap GM models with no other discounts is not much of a bargain when someone can walk in off the streets and gets a $3000 rebate + other incentives on a $14,000 car. Chevy did this with the Cavalier for years, it devaluated the Cavs more than the American reliability did. Right at the end of the Cavs existence, you could get $4500 off the base MSRP of the Cavalier 😱

Anyway, avoid the Cobalt imo. If you wanna do this deal, look into a Malibu or Vibe.

For the people suggesting Saab... he won't get one for his price range. The payments on a lease for a 9-3 are what I'm paying on my $13,000 Cavalier.

The Vibe GT is only available as a manual. Same as the Matrix with the 170hp engine. Ideally the best version would be a 170hp w/AWD, and that will probably happen eventually. That's why I was looking at the Impreza- 165hp w/AWD & auto for $19k.

Cobalt looks decent enough. Only reservation is it's the first model year. GM upped the warranty to 5yr/60k miles, which is pretty good.

Yes, I should be able to get the incentives as well. Cobalt is already $750 off. If I want to go really cheap there's always the Cavallier. $2k+ incentives on it. No thanks.

Cobalt first year, BUT the drivetrain is NOT first year. So the major items are nto as bad as SOME first year cars. Also they have been making it for a while now, so any kinks should be ok.

I think a Cobalt coupe looks like your best bet right now. Not AWD, but fits your space needs and price
