Changing backplates on my mobo as part of installing a new HSF. I need to glue it to the back of the mobo to keep the entire setup from moving around. Will anything do, or can some materials damage the board?

You had the right forum the first time.

As long as whatever you use isn't conductive it shouldn?t matter. What plate are you trying to install, shouldn't it have its own adhesive?

I'm not sure. It's a plain metal plate with a thick layer of paper on the top, attached on the two long edges with some sort of two sided tape.

If I take off the paper the remaining sticky stuff should be strong enough, but most of the metallic parts on the mobo will be connected by the backplate (not sure if it's actually conductive material, but being metallic, I wouldn't trust it).

If I leave the paper on, I have to use my own glue, and have a flammable layer on the plate facing the CPU at all times, which doesn't sound like a good idea either.

are you saying that the metal part of the backplate is touching the underside of the motherboard? the backplate for my motherboard had the metal part then a thicker foam/rubber (can't remember the material exactly) adhesive piece (like 2 sided tape) that was covered by a thin piece of paper. the paper is removed to expose the adhesive and then backplate is attached to the motherboard. the adhesive sits between the back of the motherboard and the backplate metal piece. the metal part, at least on my setup, does not actually tough the motherboard because the adhesive is there. Is that not how yours is?

Mine's just a metal plate with the 2 lines of adhesive, and a thick layer of what seems to be cardboard. I can also see fragments of drawings of a cooler on it that probably servers as a pattern on the cardboard, it looks like one of Zalman's flower heatsinks. 7000 or 7700.

The adhesive is very thin and doesn't look like it can prevent the plate from touching the mobo.
