Glue... Should I do it?

I am running with a chrome orb on my duron 700@800. It gets rather hot sometimes and it actually locks up about twice daily.

The only reason why I am using the chrome orb is because about half of the center ummmm hangy thing on the socket itself is broken off. The chrome orb has 3 holes on it so I can use that one with no problems.

With my taisol, the heatsink just pops off after its in place for about 1 hour, the clip just loses its grip because the hangy thing on the socket isn't long enough. What I'm asking is do guys know of anyway of me just replacing the socket? Next question: Should I pop the taisol on, and glue it? I wouldn't use super glue, just regular elmer's. I don't think the glue would damage anything, and if need be, it will be easy to remove.

I doubt that Elmers would be good. From what I remember from elementary school it doesn't do very well with metal and polished surfaces (like the CPU and HSF).

If you want to use the glue, then you would want to use some thermal epoxy or maybe superglue (thinner glue, stronger bound). I am hesitant to advice this though, since I don't know if the thermal conductivity of the epoxy/glue is good enough for the heat generated by the Duron.

What temperatures are you getting with your Orb? If they are under 50C, I'd just go with that. Also, what about the SuperOrb? Its better, and it might use the same clip.

Most hs/fans use a clip that just attaches itself to the center claw(I'm going to call hangy thing on the socket itself a claw from this point out). The socket has 3 claws. My center claw is only half as long as it should be because it is broken off, so normal clips don't work on my socket, they stick for about an hour then pop off. I am not asking about using glue for any type of heat transfer, I need it to keep the heatsink on.

The chrome orb attaches itself to 3 claws, as apposed to all the other heatsinks just using one. The clip that comes with the chrome orb cannot be taken off, it is built onto the heatsink.

I should probably rephrase my main question. Can glue damage a motherboard? Can removing glue damage a motherboard?

Which glue would others recomend?

Do a search for this topice of what to do if you've damaged the socket. I know there have been past postings about fixes with advice & links.

You may want to try this....go to an auto parts store and get a welding tip drill,it has many tiny size bits and is about the size of an ink pen.You spin it with your fingers to drill and it is easy and precise.Drill a hole on each side of the socket and run a spring across the heatsink with the ends bent to engage the holes you drilled,adjust tension and length accordingly...

glue works fine for me on my video cards. I use a dab of superglue on the corners then put something heavy on it for about an hour so it can set. does the job great for me.

Thermal Epoxy glue works best.
But thats used for video cards and chipsets.
I havnt considered gluing the heatsink on the CPU.
What if the glue loses its heat transfer effectiveness.
I know the two part epoxy I have claims that it is a permanent bond, and I havnt tried to challenge that yet

The new Taisol coming out, I believe also has 3 connectors. Look for that clip to be coming out soon as I think alot of people are having trouble and definitely a good moneymaker.
