Man I loved gl_quake and quakeworld. It was the whole reason I bought a 3dfx monster voodoo1 add-on card after seeing if perform on a friend's computer.

It's getting really hard to play QII... with all the crashes.

Loading leads to system shutdowns. I don't understand why. Sometimes a restart will fix it, sometimes it works other times it doesn't... grrr.

Still on the reckoning, more than half way done.

that's it, I have given up on the reckoning, compatability problems keep me from continuing.

What kind of crashes are you getting? Desktop ones or ones that require reboots?

Have you patched the game to 3.20 after installing the two mission packs?

Reading over Gamespot's review of Quake II, I noticed at how he gave it such a high score and said this one beats the original Quake. He only reviewed the graphics and the multiplayer. What a CRAPPY review.

After I stopped playing The Reckoning, I popped in Ground Zero. I started playing it. THIS is a different game, felt the same feeling as the first one.

Went and read the Gamespot reviews for both expansions. It's basically the same disappointing game that Quake II was, but with little modifications that don't change the feel of the game.

Conclusion:

Quake II was a disappointment as a sequel to Quake in the single-player aspect.

The expansions are a shame and suck more because they extend the same feeling that begins to annoy me at the end of Quake II. It's like playing Quake II 2 more times.

Final Score:

Quake II - 3/5 Stars
The Reckoning - 2/5 Stars
Ground Zero - 2/5 Stars

No, just the loading of the game. You can press ESC and start a new game or load the previous one.

The saving grace of Quake2 was the amount of control you have over the system thru the UBER Wonderfull console control.

I spent time effort learning it, and getting nice bindings going with favorite weapons. First time I relased that I was doing some half-way decent programming and learned the power of scripting. One of the reasons that I use linux today.

Still play it online today, very very competative and very fast. Twitch gaming, one rocket, one rail, one gernade can kill you at 100% health. No circling around slowing ginding away at newbs in this game.

Single player was so-so, but this is why ID is making it's multiplayer and single player games seperate nowadays. The original quake was admismal at multiplarer, quakeworld helped it out a lot.

wtf?? for it's time, netquake and mplayer quake OWNED. Played in numerous ladders in 96-98 on my 28.8 and it was awesome....first year of high school wasted :)

Well your conclusion of Quake2 is accurate, but you forgot the one saving grace of Quake2: Rocket Arena 2. The redone version of Rocket Arena had some really nice touches. It was the first version that had multiple 'small maps' all built into one large map, allowing you warp around and have multiple battles going on at once. It also had a pickup mode that was similar to clan arena for Quake1. It also had the rail gun, which was very cool in Rocket Arena. Infact, it almost turned it into railgun arena.

Q2 was more about multiplayer, and aside from massive objective type multiplayer games, Q2 was the best MP all time. All of the great mods were for Q2.

I also liked Quake 1 singleplayer over Quake 2. Also, Quake 1 with the Tenebrae addon is very nice.

Here's the tenebrae site for those who never tried it:

Tenebrae

Site seems to be having some problems..but the downloads are there.

Tenebrae has serious lag problems. Honestly, Far Cry at highest quality runs faster than Tenebrae Quake at lowest quality.

Well, overall Quake1 had a far better multiplayer community than Quake2. I think Quake2 brought some new and cool things to the table, but Quake1 did it first and did it better. Quakeworld, Original TeamFortress, Expert CTF, Action Quake, Threewave CTF, Future vs Fantasy, Clan Arena, Rocket Arena, Direct Arena, Midair Arena, and Kteams Pro to name a few.
