The reflections from glossy screens are mostly negated if you have a panel that'll get REALLY bright. As I mentioned in my
Envy 14 review, the display brightness can be turned up so high that I have no problems ignoring glare from windows or light bulbs behind me.
Similarly, when I bought an Envy 15 (previous to the Envy 14, returned it later due to some design flaws), I had the choice between 15.6", 1080P glossy or 1080P matte. Many people opted for matte and ended up being somewhat disappointed - colors were less vibrant, and the entire screen was noticeably less bright.
Even with a matte screen, you can still get annoying bright "reflections" from windows, light bulbs, etc., the reflection just isn't as sharp or bright. Personally, I think the short term fix is to get a laptop with really good brightness, and eventually I hope that panel manufacturers come up with some digital diffuser or polarizer or something to that fact, which can be toggled on and off to go between glossy and matte.
