For those of you who own one, how do you like it and is it loud? I saw one with a different fan supposedly less noisy but just as powerful. I'm shying away from the fop38 cause I hear it's a jackhammer on steroids. Also is it easy to install(the 32-1)? I want to build a system bit by bit and am considering all options. Would probably do some moderate o/c'ing as well with it. Any comments welcome.

I just built my first computer. I have the fop 32-1 on a duron 600@969. The fan is quiet enouch for me but my wife complains a little bit. I took it on and off about 4 times. You have to be very careful because it takes alot of pressure to clip it on the chip. I used a pencil eraser to clip it.

Thanks psykohog. That's a nice o/c for a 600. What thermal compund did you use and how long has the system been running stable? I'd like to get a 750 thunderbird to a gig and it seems this hsf can handle it. Also, looks like you fiddled with the multiplier and the fsb. Did you have to change voltage at all? Like to hear from you again. Thanks.

Taplight,
I have the FOP32-1 on a 700MHz Athlon, it is not noticeable over my case fans (120mm in front, 92mm in rear) the thing I like about it is..................the heat sink itself is small enough at the base to fit any mb (I think?) plus the fan is easily replaced w/any other type by just removing two spring clips used as fan retainers.............no need to disturb cpu/hs connection!
You can install the hsf as you are building the pc, I installed mine onto the bare mb, before installing any pci cards.......................mounted the mb into case, lay the case on it's side and mount hsf...........no problem, plenty of leverage....less chance of slipping?
This might not be your best pick if you are going for maxium OC'ing w/minimum noise?

psykohog,
Sounds like a really cool idea about the pencil eraser,....................hard to damage a mb w/a soft eraser!
I used needle-nose pliers (not the smooth jawed ones!).................. but I could have easily screwed up..........................next time its the pencil trick for me...!

i have a FOP-38 with the delta 7000 RPM fan. i don't think it is as loud as people say it is. i run my computer with no case on and find the noise level acceptable. maybe i am deaf though :)

clumsum,

Thanks for the info, I didn't consider the noise of case fans cause I plan to get those too. I also considered the PAL 6035 but the deal on the fop is too good to pass up. I figure for $15 I can try it out and if I don't like it i'll give it to a friend. I'll try psykohog's eraser method also.. that sounds safe.

hclarkjr,

lol! Maybe you weren't deaf before you got the fan! Didn't mean to bash your baby. I know how attached we all are to our rigs and all it's beautiful components.

Most case fans, especially the 92 mm. ones or larger, will drown out that little 60 mm. fan on the FOP32-1 (although some small fans can be very noisy). For quiet case fans get Panaflo L1A series fans, which move less air than the typical fans of their respective size, but are therefore quieter. Check fan CFM & dBA here.

P.S.
When installing the FOP32-1 flex the clips a few times to hopefully loosen them a bit. Using an anti-static wriststrap, take the mobo out of the case carefully to install the HSF on the CPU more easily.

the fop32 fan is not loud at all, i shyed away from the fop38 because i thought it would sound like a jet engine from what i had heard from others, but now im sorry i didnt opt for the 38 cause i can barely hear the 32

Ulysses,

Thanks for the links. From what I'm getting on this thread and others, most people are satisfied with their fop's and since the one I'm getting is a modified quieter fan, it should do the trick. Slap on some arctic silver, get a couple of those panaflo's and I should be in business. Even try my hand at my first o'c. Can't wait to pop my cherry! Buckmater and Soltek, thanks for your comments as well.

Hey,
Where are you getting your FOP32-1 from? I am also interested in buying a few for a couple of duron 650's I want to overclock some.

Thanks!

Are there any boards/cases that the FOP32 has trouble fitting in? I just want to double check that mine will fit in an Abit Kt7 in an Inwin s500 case.

Dig,
No problems with fit on the KT7,(I have one on my KT7-R) or any other Athlon mb's that I have read about,
The FOP32-1/38 base is about the same size as the socket A, then it steps up to a larger size for the 60mm fan to attach to.............

Should be no problem w/the S500 either, since the ps is above the mb.........

Okay, thanks. So I assume the base extends higher than the capacitors that surround the CPU socket? With an earlier system, I had to bend back those capacitors to make room for a Chrome Orb.

what kind of thermal compound do all of you use? the Artic silver is so dang expensive and I don't think i need much at all. How about a silicone thermal compound? It's much cheaper. Or i can buy several drops from one of you?

Come on, artic silver isn't THAT expensive ;) Pretty much all tests I've seen have shown it to be far more effective than your common or garden thermal adhesive, and I'd say it's well worth that little bit extra.

Where I come from Arctic Silver is sssoooo expensive - $25 AUD before shipping. And it is not avalible anywhere else.
I am wondering weather the FOP32's thermal tape will be any better than the Radio Shack silicone grease. I am running a Duron 800 without o/c.
Is the tape easy to remove after it has been on the cpu?

holdencommodore,
I removed the tape off my FOP-32 and used Radio Shack grease. I have my Duron 600@1GHZ@38C Idle. I would for sure remove the tape and atleast use Radio Shack Grease $1.99 if you dont want to buy Arctic Silver. I used some stuff called "Goof Off" my wife bought it for removing paint, gum, and grease. It came right off its the best stuff Ive ever used. You would never use it to clean the CPU core! Ive heard from some one on here using WD-40, but Ive never used it myself.
