Global warming....

Anyone else agree with me that all this global warming stuff is just bs? Yes, the average tempurature is raising, but I don't think it has anything to do with us. My earth science teacher showed us this chart of the average tempurate over the earth's history, and its been much higher than it is now(and this wasnt the period where the earth was just molten lava). Its a cycle...gradually warmer, then steep dropoff(ice age). I'm tired of hearing all the enviromentalists complain. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an anti-enviromentalist, I just think global warming is bs.
 
Oh ok, I forgot, history is irrelevant, it doesn't matter that the period before the last ice age was like 10 degrees hotter on average than it is now.
 
Whether or not global warming is for real or not, as long as people believe it is, it's all good since the people will be more conscientious about the environment.
Maybe people will begin to bury their CD's instead of setting them on fire.

Yes the earth's temperature fluctuates (could have something to do with the sun's cycles) but i don't think the earth is due for a change like this and maybe that is why there is a concern?
 
It is not clear to me weather or not global warming is bs, the actual amount of warming that has been seen is very small. We also only have accruate weather records for about 100yrs it may be there are longer term cycles that we do not know about yet.

Even though I am not sold on global warming I can see no harm and only good in controling the emmisions we release into the atmosphere.

A few years back I read a small book called Gaia by James Lovelock. He introduced the concept of the earth as living organism. He presents data which show both the sea and the atmosphere are not in a natural equilibrium. The chemistry of both are maintained by the existance of life. If the system is subjected to slow changes, natural processes will react to counter those changes while maintaining a stable environment. If on the other rapid changes occur the natural systems may be thrown out of balance, this could have disasturous effects on life as we know it.

When we manage to foul the system (our environment) enough Gaia will react to eliminate the disease and the human race will cease to exist. I have complete faith though, life will continue, the species that is best adapted to survive in the environment we leave behind will evolve to replace us. Ants? Cockroaches? who knows.

It does affect us though... especially the industrial sector. The special interest groups buy their way into passing laws on emissions, and the next thing you know, an industrial company can't open in the US/Canada, or must be moved to a 3rd world country where emissions aren't a concern, or the costs of operating within emissions standards are so high that it affects our costs as well.

I'm all for having a balance of things.. and do believe that some emission control are needed. But the PARANOIA that these environmentalists cause is definitely out of balance of the true effect of global warming. In all my years of education, i have yet to meet a teacher or professor that believes in the seriousness of global warming... and infact, two of the biggest proponents to it that i've encountered has been two of my philosophy profs, one was a professor of a Critical Thinking course, and another a professor of Philosophy of Politics.

 
While I agree that the earth's temperature naturally fluctuates, I disagree that humans are not influencing it with all the emissions they put into the air. Humans have too much impact (mostly negative) on the environment as a whole to not influence climate as well.
