I thought global warming was caused by farting cows?

Cattle and sheep farts are one of the sources of greenhouse gasses. Obviously, there are more.

Global warming is real, and humanity may live or die from how it manifests. The point is, regardless of other sources of greenhouse gasses, human activity the one element of the equation about which we can do anything.

Regardless of whether we eventually succeed in preventing our own demise, we don't have to be stupid enough to volunteer for it.
Yea, and it gives us something to think about while we are waiting to die from whatever we are going to die from. Kind of like religion.

ProfJohn - please, please, please stop your useless drivel.

Yes, apparently 1998 was the hottest year on record - some argue 2005, and some are even saying 2007 may have been.

But, how do you take "The six warmest years in the GISS record have all occurred since 1998, and the 15 warmest years in the record have all occurred since 1988." and pretend there is no trend here?

I'm not in the doom & gloom GW camp, but I think it's clear something is going on - understanding what it is, and how it might continue to impact us - should be in everyone's agenda - and this shouldn't be a political issue at all.

And in come the global warming zealots with the faith in their cause that would do any preaching minister proud.

I think it's clear something is going on

Something is always going on. The earth is always getting hotter or colder. Always. It's probably on an up-cycle now. We have NO F**KING CLUE WHY, either 🙂

Last week we were supposed to get 10-12 inches of snow. We got 3. Two days ago it was supposed to be into the 40's and 50's. It was much colder. Sorry if I have a hard time believing what somebody is forecasting about the world, decades from now.

What's this "would have" talk? In a past life, that's exactly what I did! And in this life, I narc off my black neighbors for having too many visitors to their house...

No its not the greatest threat facing humankind, but it is a significant problem that we should work to remedy as soon as possible.

GoPackGo: No.
So what is your plan with Volcano's and those little bodies of water we call the OCEAN. Because those are the main causes of temperatures warming.

Cap the volcanos and bottle all the water?

And how long have we been recording temperatures across the globe?

I don't know about temps, but we have been able to measure the periodic concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for the last 1000 years. It is a fact that the levels have increased in the past 200 years significantly. Beyond that everything is theory.

When I read between the lines, I find it amazing that the results are available only because The ice has been accumulating for the past 1000 years, and likely beyond that, which would also indicate that it wasn't always there. Maybe we are in the process of fixing the earth.

I believe the only decent reaction to all this GW nonsense is this: No matter what the cause, or the effects, cleaning up our industries and lifestyles cant be a bad thing, so why fight against it so hard?

Will mandating alternative or more efficient sources of energy cause more problems? no? then why not just go along for the ride? Will changing the way we dispose of waste effect our lives that much? no? Then why not do it?!

regardless of the root cause(s) -- the who/what to blame for GW (if it even exists) -- any changes we make to clean up our lives can't frickin hurt. Heck, as with the Internet thing, we can even let Al Gore go on believing that he saved everyone!

Very nicely put and what every response in this thread should contain instead of all the other bullshit posted.

That makes a fair amount of sense, which is probably why the environmental debate doesn't sound more like this. I think most people are going into the debate with a political agenda of one sort or another, and the great thing about global warming is that it's a complicated, hard to understand issue that can basically be anything you want it to be...because most of the people aren't able to tell one way or another.

On one side, you can make the argument that it's just environmentalist fringe lunatics gone wild, which is an implied argument to not do ANYTHING, because why should we listen to anything Al Gore and his crowd say? On the other side, it's a great argument to FORCE us to clean up our act. There are other reasons to do so, of course, but none so compelling as mass extinction. I think there is actual truth at the center of the debate, but that's pretty irrelevant to the debate as it's conducted in public. As in many areas of politics, I think the fight is way more important than actually getting anything done. Using the terms loosely, the "left" has long objected to the "right's" rejection of everything about the environmental movement, so "You're all going to die, you stupid fucks" is a pretty good way to try to get them to listen. And the "right" has long believed that the "lefty" environmental movement isn't worth listening to because it's densely packed with complete space loons, so mocking Al Gore is an excellent way to try and silence all the pro-environment people.

Meanwhile, the actual scientists who know anything about anything are staying out of the political side of the argument as best as humanly possible. The political side is kind of like watching Elementary School remedial class students arguing about M-Theory. Though, that's insulting to the remedial students, because at least they're not tunnel visioned pricks.

We blow off GHG because its still cheap to do so, once peak oil hits it won't be, and we will be looking at energy solutions and one of the best is conservation. . .
So end result is the same.
I worry more about that than global warming.
