"Global thirst for U.S. brands unabated"

Consumers around the world put aside any ill-feeling about U.S. foreign policy when they choose their fast food, soft drinks and sports shoes, a Harvard Business School study has found.

I thought this was interesting. Either US products are viewed as really really really good or people's perceived ill feelings aren't as emphatic as they are made out to be.

Hi,

People are shallow. The vast majority - even if "anti-US whatever" is it truly their belief - won't stand up for their principles in terms of trade if it means comprimising the brands/image/products they love.

I don't like China's communist regime but I don't vet my shopping to eliminate products that are made in China.

Cheers,

Andy

He is dead right. Just because they don't agree with the politics of a particular country doesnt mean they would stop buying products from that country.

Sure they would, if they really had strong ill-feelings. I think this just makes the point that there's a disagreement out there and not a rabid hatred like democrats are trying to insinuate.

I guess it depends on your definition of "strong" then.

Go figure, here I was expecting to have a have a intellectual conversation about the way world views america and you go ahead make a rather pointless partisan attack on democrats.

Since when are sports shoes made in America? The last brand I'm aware of that made their shoes in America was New Balance and I believe they've given up.

Ironic too, he speaks of rabid hatred while labeling all democrats in a rather unflattering way..

Well of course! There are hypocrites everywhere around the world that chastise America while holding a Coca-Cola coming out of a McDonalds in their Nike Air running shoes. Nearly all the stuff that Saddam was found in his rat hole with were American products. They can't live without Western luxuries once they get them, but it doesn't dawn on them that we're getting the last word on their incessant complaining with their money.

"Yeah, whatever. That'll be $4.73."

You call that an attack?

By all means, I expect an intellectual discussion, but, at the same time, this news does, in fact, refute the negative inferences that the world hates us, which is why it's postworthy.

<Obvious> Peoples ideals are easily compromised for the sake of convenience and/or want. </Obvious>

I live in Southern California, and there is this self important pinko at work that is constantly telling everyone about his progressive ideals. The other day he made a comment about how he couldnt fathom people crossing the super market strikers picket line when their fight is "everyones fight". I looked up his address and sure enough, he isnt but 5 minutes from a Trader Joes AND a Whole Foods. Boy, what a trooper!

I now make a point of bringing my lunch on a Vons bag just to spite him:)

I think people admire our lifestyle a lot. Of course, they get mad when we bitch, which is what we do sometimes. I mean, to the rest of the world, we're the superpowers and millionaires living in the lap of luxury. When we "sympathize" with other countries it's not very pretty sometimes.

Basically we're a bunch of spoiled brats around here, and they wish they were us :).

I try not to buy anything made in Mexico anymore, after jail there, I don't feel it's right to support such a corrupt system, especially when there are thousands of americans who are still in there, stuck.

I dont think the dollar has anything to do with it. After all them Burgers are not shipped over here they are produced here from local beef.... the dollar has no influence on the burger price here.

It only has to do with brand recognition. Fastfood is American so are the places that sell those thigs: McD, Burger King, KFC... There are almost no local fastfood franchises and even if there are they are not worldwide. Same with Coca Cola. A cola is a coke.

Dunno about Nike shoes, I think that is a thing of the past nowadays Puma, sometimes Adidas are the "In" shoes. But well Im not in that kind of social setting where friggin sport shoes are of any deal besides wearing them for sport. So maybe Nikes are still THE shoes....
And also here the dollar has no influence on the price. The shoes are made in Thai sweatshops. It is all marketing.

Btw. I specifically do not buy Nikes when I buy sport shoes. Nike is a very horrible company. They make the ppl work 13+ hrs a day, punish them when the workers get tired (They have to pay out of their miniscule pay when they make a mistake due to fallling asleep) And they tolerate (provide) amphetamine (Speed) which the workers take to stay awake. Fvcking slavery company. But I wouldnt wonder if other companies do that too.... (no matter where they are from)

Actually opening up McDonalds around the world is just an American Conspiracy to sicken the rest of the world by feeding them unhealthy food!
