Also AR is worthless IMHO. I've never had it help, it only gives you a VERY scratchable surface to the lens. You cannot do anything but wet-wash these and even then a little bit of dust can scratch the bejesus out of tme. I've done A/R 3 times, never having the lens last more than 3 months. Once scratched it actually glares MORE.

My dad got glasses one time with the anti-reflective and anti-scratch coating. His eye lashes tended to be long, and when he'd go out golfing, the perspiration on his eye lashes, which were brushing against the lenses, was actually scratching the coatings on the lenses! 😱 Needless to say, he took the glasses back, showed them what was happening, and had them re-made (for free), without the coatings.

Costco

/thread

You do realize that's only helpful if a person has a Costco nearby where they live, right? Personally, mine is 2 hours drive away. What I save by going there, I end up putting in my gas tank. So maybe we'll leave the thread open a little longer, if that's okay? 🙄

OP, if you're getting charged that much for frames, you're paying retail for designer frames, and getting ripped off for it. There are plenty of great frames out there, that can be picked up for <$99. The coatings are like the add-ons the car dealer tries to talk you into, once you've settled on a deal for your new car. They really don't add much to the value, but they add a LOT to the total you're paying.

For sure, shop around when you're buying glasses. And remember, function beats fashion, any time, any day.

I actually just bought glasses last week for the first time in a long time. Usually a contact wearer, but my surgery in three weeks is going to require glasses.

Frames were $280 or so, my insurance covers the first $120 and then 20% beyond that. I also got two polycarb lenses ($65/ea) with no prescription. We're not entirely sure if insurance will cover that, but if not they will cover the one with a prescription that I get in a few months.

Either way, it's well more than I pay into the insurance in a year.

Zenni has been fantastic for us with glasses, but now my son wants contacts. Who is the Zenni of on-line contact lenses?

Just called the place I got them from. She says she already ordered lenses and it's too late.

Seems like I should have some way out of this considering that it has taken over 2.5 weeks just to get to this part, but I may be screwed.

FWIW: Perscription is "small":
R Sphere -.25
L Sphere 0
R Cylinder -1.25
L Cylinder -1.25
R Axis 095
L Axis 085

Your prescription is not bad at all. You could probably use one of the Asian sites mentioned and get a cheap pair that fits your needs. In my case, I had a horrible prescription and when I tried glasses from Zenni and another place, the lenses were still too thick. I needed to get the thinnest lens made at a local optician. Last year I had LASEK so I happily ditched my glasses.

As for AR coating, it was well worth it for me. Then again I live in FL where sun glare is a constant problem. Without the coating your eyes can also get covered up by reflections to other people.

It seems like if she just put an order in for the lenses yesterday, it wouldn't be too late to cancel today. But I don't really know much about this stuff.

there isn't one. Contacts are not like glasses. There are no imitations brands. If there were, would you really want to put them in your eyes? For contacts, you have to go to a fitting exam whenever you wan to try a different brand.

WOW.

Dude, you are a pussy among us blind people. That's practically a "nothing" prescription compared to my whopping -7.0 R and L Cylinder, -0.75 L/R Sphere.

There is no reason your lenses should be $200. The A/R coating is not $99, even the coating I got on my hi-index (very reflection prone) Nikon lenses were $50 at a very expensive place. Cheap plastic lenses that work perfectly for prescriptions that low should be under $50. Hi-index is when it gets expensive, and only good for cosmetic reasons.

Sorry🙁.

Yeah. Just one of those live and learn events. It's funny because I NEVER make large purchases before checking the internet first... Except for this ONE time---

SCRRRRRRR!! --- Just got a call back from the owner. She has cancelled the lens order and is refunding me the $230!!!!!! So pumped!

Right when she got on the phone she goes, "Stuff like this is really problematic for me because I had already made the order. I called the lens company and they said they have already got the lenses ready, but they are still able to cancel. Now, on the bill of sale that I gave you, it mentions very clearly that there are NO refunds, only store credit... <pause> ... Now this one time I will give you a refund, but please try and plan better in the future".

WIN! Costco here I come!

I was wanting to order from zennioptical. However my prescription place didn't have the PD on the thing, and apparently will only take it if I order from them. They know people are going online. 😛

Never thought of it that way. Thanks!!

Call Zenni and have them send you one of their PD rulers. Very easy to measure your pupil distance with one.....
