my little brother is washing the dishes when he calls me over for help. he hands me a mug with a tall glass in it. he claims that while washing the two, he just put (didn't force it) the glass inside the mug and picked it up a little later to find the two stuck fast.

the cups were cold when he handed them to me so i suspected that there was some heat expansion and subsequent contraction involved. i tried running both under hot water at first but realized i had to heat the mug and not the glass. i filled the glass with cold water and again tried running the mug under hot. then i tried putting ice in the glass and heating it over a candle, and then putting it on the stove. still no luck.

and momma claims these are her two favorite cups, so no breaking one to salvage the other.

Hmm.

I was going to suggest the hot/cold water thing..can it move at all, or is it completely stuck (ie no movement at all)?

hold the mug on it's side and lightly tap it on the counter. This worked for us when I used to work at a cafe and the glases sometimes got stuck inside one another.

Just let it sit at room temperature until the hydraulic seal dissipates. You will then be able to separate them.

yes i do, but your method takes more time than the others suggested so i figured i'd try those first

By the time you try all the others, you might as well have tried that one. :p
