glass replacement

So to make a long story short I managed to turn off my alarm for my car by accident while heading to ride my bike, and some knucklehead broke into my car to steal a total of

1) Semi-broke Passport radar detector (and they forgot the cord.. lol)
2) about 2 dollars worth of change

The guy completely forgot to get my $300 sunglasses and my IPass; there was nothing else of any value.

anyways I need to get the passenger side glass replaced. The car is my "just out of college" nissan sentra (2004), and I don't think it will be too expensive but I am wondering what prices are "typical" for that kind of replacement in Chicago (I don't need OEM parts, just something that fits and works). What should I expect? I have some friends say $60 and some say $200.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, i didn't think it would be too cheap, I guess that means its about $60/hr labor rate plus what $120 for the glass?

I also heard that you can do it yourself and it's not too hard, but I really do not have more than a day to invest in repair, err maybe not with rainstorms coming...

The crazy part is that what happened exactly was that I was putting my keys away and I accidently hit the panic button so to turn it off I hit the lock/unlock button which did two things, one of which i wasn't aware of: 1) it silenced my alarm 2) it opened all my locks.

The sad part is that this idiot didn't bother to check if the doors were open before smashing my window! He could have just gotten my semi busted escort and $2 worth of change and I would have kept apparently $200 which I have to now shell out to fix my broke window before it rains.

Don't believe I'd try that one myself if you've never done that type of work before. I'm not certain on your particular car, but many glasses like that are riveted on and have to be drilled out and the new one riveted on. NOT a piece of cake, even for me, and I do this type of work all the time.

oh...

I thought it was just bolted in, well goodbye lunch money for the next 1+1/2 months.

When you mean passenger side window are you refering to the door or the small triangular window in the corner. If you mean one of the door windows you can easily replace that yourself. If take the door panel off the window pretty much comes off of it's track or window regulator and you can insert a new window.

It might be. So you take off the door panel, inner splash shield (plastic inside the panel) and access the glass that way.

At that point, you can see whether it's bolted, or riveted, or glued on. Yep, some are glued on, too.

You'll need to take the belt moulding (the things that look kind of like felt that wipes the window as it goes up/down) off to get the window out.

Then, assuming it's bolt-on and you unbolted it, you'll have to hold your mouth just right, and likely utter a few choice words to fish it out.
Other than these potential problems, it's a piece of cake.

I had someone break that small triangular window on my old Nissan Sentra (in the rear seat).
I ended up going with Safelite - apparently they're one of the "big names" in this glass replacement industry.
Anyway, I later found out that you can definitely call around and some places will match prices... give it a shot.
For me: it was around $200 though.

Why do people go for that triangular window? It's a reach from the door lock esp in the two door.

Just being thoughtful and limiting your repair costs. j/k

It makes less noise, I believe.

i just had a very similar break in happen. 2003 nissan sentra. the little triangle window in the rear seat was broken, cost $170 to fix. dude cut himself reaching for the door latch inside the car and got blood all over. stole a bag with some pennies in it, a disposable camera that had been in my glove box for 3 years, an empty plastic bag, and maybe my umbrella (haven't seen it lately, not sure if i misplaced it or not). meanwhile, left in the car two pairs of rayban sunglasses sitting in the sunglass tray and the cubby in the top of the dash.

about crooks not checking the doors, my father was stationed in GA back in the day. one of the towns around there had a reputation for a lot of break ins. so when he went, he took everything valuable out of the car and left the doors unlocked. still had his window broken.

went in today to get it fixed... it was the front pass window. Total cost $81 with tax.

The place was Majestic Auto Glass on Ashland in Chicago. They make their own glass and also do installs. I got in at 0730 and was out at 0830
