glaring LCD screen

i just brought an LCD monitor, the display is so glaring!
is there something wrong with the monitor?

Glaring is in it is bright? Try turning down your monitor's brightness/gamma settings.

Make sure it's running in its native resolution.

15 inch - 1024x768
16/17/18 inch - 1280x1024
19 inch - 1600x1200
20/21 and higher - 1600x1200 or more

it looks better running in 15 inch - 1024x768, but the screen is still very bright and glaring which makes my eyes tired...
any idea?

I would have a play with the brightness and contrast controls. See if you can activate the OSD (on screen display) and have a play there.

Also look for dead pixels, maybe you can get it exchanged if it has any, a very dissapointing aspect if it does, At least I think so.

its an NEC 1550V LCD

It most certainly does. Look at this file to prove it has buttons to access the OSD. It's an Acrobat file (PDF).

Don't understand the question, without a monitor you won't get far in computing, at least for now.

Oh well yes and no. The price is still a lot higher than a comparable CRT screen of the same size. You do get lower radiation though and with DVI inputs the picture quality tends to be very good. As for playing games, there are brand new lines available with ultra fast response times removing any ghosting effect, with that said most current LCD's on the market have no problem at all. Some even allow you to hang them on the wall if that is of any use to you.

Get one with digital inputs, with analog you lose some image quality.

I'm not too sure about that NEC but the Philips 150P3A is known to be one of the best 15 inch LCD panels currently in the market.

For non-DVI 15",
I recommend NEC 1550M only, it's just US$20-30 more than 1550V,
different panel,
much higher contrast - 450:1,
much higher brightness - 300 cd,
wider viewing angle,
with speakers and usb 4-port hub.

For DVI 15",
I recommend Eizo L365 only.
