so is this a publicity stunt or not?

IMHO, yes. I feel like this whole thing was plotted and executed in an attempt to keep the new iPhone in the headlines as consumers eat up the Droid Incredible.

This iPhone story is far from over.

I don't get the big deal about the before and after pictures.

The guys went from looking kinda nerdy to looking kinda trendy? So what? They're a public face for Apple, they need to look good.

considering the ITU hasn't actually adopted anything as 4G at this point and only clear/sprint's new network is different enough from what came before to even be in the running when ITU gets around to it, calling it an iphone 4G is a bit premature at this point. unless it runs wimax. which i doubt.

iphone 3GX?

Of course this was a publicity stunt. Like someone is actually going to wander into a bar with a prototype phone in the first place, and then just leave it there. It was done on purpose to get viral publicity for the phone.

I lost what little respect I had left for gizmodo for participating in this obvious stunt. Engadget >>>>>> * >Gizmodo.

You lost respect for Gizmodo for doing exactly what they're supposed to do? Dude... get your head out of your ass.

Working with Apple to promote their phone by creating fictional stories is what they're supposed to do?

and apparently may still be working at Apple—as he should be. After all, it's just a fucking iPhone and mistakes can happen to everyone
Has Jesus Diaz ever had a job in business? One with NDAs, trade secrets, or worse, government clearances? His whole attitude towards security in this article is ridiculous.

Companies protect their IP for a reason. Even if this is a giant publicity stunt by Apple, this line shows true ignorance to the world if you ask me.

Most of Diaz's articles seem completely ridiculous to me in general. The guy is pretty much obsessed with Apple.

The flippant style that Giz has displayed is the key to my conspiracy theory that this is ALL a stunt. If it weren't then buying the phone, posting pics, and taking it apart would open them up to serious legal penalty, which would then a more serious tone.

Instead, they're acting as if its just a freaking game. They wouldn't do that if they didn't have the ok of someone at apple.

But they will have absolutely no shred of credibility left if this is revealed to be a stunt, and I really don't think they are that stupid as to risk losing a significant chunk of readers just to drum up hype for a phone that will already get more than enough hype in the days/weeks/months leading up to its release.

I mean when has Apple needed to create viral hype for a product in the last 4-5 years? That would be something you would do if you don't think your product will generate enough buzz on its own, and we have not seen that to be an issue for Apple in recent history.

Apple stands to lose a lot of money if they keep to their past iPhone marketing. They need to get people to want the new iPhone. It does seem rather far fetched that all of this was just coincidence.

So you really, really, really don't think that people would not have been excited for the iphone if this little snafu hadn't occurred? Gadget blogs and mainstream press wouldn't have covered the unveiling at WWDC? Heck, non tech people at work ask, "the new iphone is coming out this summer, right?" and that was well before this supposed plant.

If anything, this steals some of the thunder from the unveiling, assuming the final model looks like what we have seen.
