Oh, Bullcrap. Apple gave it to Gizmodo. All the rumors that come out, come from Apple directly. This was no accident. it's is called marketing. People can not be this stupid. Apple is a big hype machine. that is their business model.

"I find Gizmodo's article on why they think it is real pretty compelling, but I can't figure out why they don't show a pic of the processor...I mean if it is an ARM, isn't that a little suspicious (assuming the rumors of Apple using an A4 proc were true)? "
Because Gizmodo singed an NDA before being handed the phone ... DUH!

I suppose, but this is a far cry from the typical Apple PR, and I would have to imagine that the tech blogosphere's penchant for creating scandals would make this a toxic shitstorm for Gizmodo as far as credibility and openness go.

In fairness Apple has never done anything like this in terms of a deliberate "leak." Historically they've been absolutely opaque about unreleased products. Admittedly this leak came at a good time for Apple, and presumably only a month or two before the product is announced and released, but I am still not convinced this was intentional.

No, the real reason is probably more along the lines of, internal specs werent disclosed by other sites, so doing so opens them up to potential legal liabilties. Everything Gizmodo said or showed had ALREADY been shown by Engadget and a Chinese Website which was widely circulated because of a MacRumors user. Gizmodo just had better pictures and more authentic/authoritative articles.

I don't know if I'm going to buy it that Apple gave it to Gizmodo. But I lost some respect for Gizmodo when they released that guy's name, this should have just been a post with some pictures and a tiny bit of background info, no personal information.

I stopped reading them when they were at that trade show with a universal remote and started fucking with people's live presentations.

stupid to assume apple leaked it, its the opposite of their regular and well tested strategy of secrecy.
never mind that apple is hardly desperate at this point, they are on top.

The battery goes from 1200 mAh in the 3GS to 1400 mAh in this prototype. I hope that means longer battery life, not that the new iPhone sucks more power.

I think that Apple is focusing on battery life in its latest lineup - from the Macbook Pro's to the iPad we can see that Apple is placing a premium on longer-lasting devices. I, for one, am excited by this as I would love phones/gadgets to last longer.

No matter how Apple tries to spin this they're going to look bad. That 1984 commercial is so ironic. Jobs is becoming a very bitter old man.

Well, I dunno about looking bad - technically (fanboyism aside), Gizmodo published the secrets of a multi-billion technology dollar company, one that specifically makes a large amount of profit off their secrecy due to marketing and hype. So from a purely business perspective, that's a pretty big deal.

And it would be a bigger deal, legally, if Apple's shares hadn't gone up $20 a share when it was leaked :D

Doesn't matter... Steve Jobs will want to make an example out of Gizmodo, just to keep the scare the other tech rumor sites. Depending on the outcome, this should be enough to keep the other Apple rumor sites in line if they happen to "find" another Apple prototype in the future.

After this fiasco, the tech bloggers will just be smarter to not admit anything about finding a 'lost' prototype and keep leaking out photos/gadget details.
