Giving myself a pat on the back

I'm just feeling good about my achievement. Hope you guys don't mind me tooting my own horn a little bit.

Here's to me and my 100,000 points...

Already?

Wow, congrats.

Seems like just last week we were helping you to get the clients going.

Thanks guys, I'm amazed also.

Judging from my charts, I'd say that I could have reached there sooner but I have to either pause work or quit the client when I'm ready to do some gaming. So nothing gets done (not even at a slow pace) while I'm gaming.

Also, Hurricane Gustav hit my island recently so I was without power for a while and so my production was somewhat halted there too.

All in all, I think its a nice achievement.

Congrats...sounds like another case of PAD ( points addiction disorder). There is no cure, and symptoms are only occasionally relieved by infusions of fresh silicon based chips.

For sure. You can never have enough silicone. Oh wait, that's Pam Anderson's motto. I meant silicon. 😉

Thanks guys.

I have a question though. My next upgrade will be a new video card, for gaming not crunching 🙁 sorry.

Is there any truth to the rumour that the next GPU client to be released will actually have better PPD output for ATI cards?

I'm considering getting a 1GB 4870 when they are released.

It's rumored to fair better than the old client did on ATI cards, but I think the "kick NVidia azz" is little more than FUD spread by hopeful ATI owners.

😛

😀

Thing is, my rig is mainly for gaming but since I've starting crunching, I've gotten concerned about my daily output.

😕

GTX260 then. Similar performance to a 4870 for less money and better at F@H when not gaming.
I'm not all that sure that ATI's stream processor are indeed "as" programmable at Nvidia's.
But then again, you can't compare sp to sp. GTX260 with 192 stream processors are on par with 4870's 800 stream processors. Different architectures, but I think Nvidia had CUDA in mind for a long time now. Probably while in developement of G80 years ago. ATI, afaik, has not dedicated as much into GPGPU up to this point. Now however, I can see them forcing themselves to place more focus on this aspect of GPU usage. But Nvidia seems to be a few light years ahead at the present time. IMHO.

Not trying to tell you which to buy. But I am giving you some facts and info mixed in with my opinion and personal preferences.

Much appreciated keys but I'm still not sure yet. The GTX 260 was my first choice but since acquiring an X48 board, the ATI scenario just became a lot more appealing.

In any case, a 4870 should output more PPD than my current card, 8800GTS 320MB.
Am I right?

I would be very surprised if a 4870 out crunches an 8800GTS 320

Well, let me take that back. I don't think it will surpass the ones here they are G92 8800GTS, (512MB) so that might not translate all that well.

I could easily be wrong.

As a side note, if you avoid the benchmark pitfalls and hype, I don't think you are going to see much (if any) of a gaming experience difference from NVidia to ATI.

Well... your PC won't crash as often with NVidia, but I'll save that for a fanboy thread.

Well, we have 4850 with a PPD of 2000 at stock clocks, and 2400 PPD o/c'd.
The 8800GTS 320 (G80) gets 3570 at stock clocks and about 3660 o/c'd.

Best case scenario PPD for a 4870 would probably be much less than a stock clocked 8800GTS 320. Believe it or not.

My 8800GTS's (740 mhz stock) do 5300 ppd, the same as my 8800 GT's OC'ed to 700. (both 512 meg cards)

I get between 5300 and 5400 on each of my G92 8800GTS 512MB vids if I turn off the SMP running with them. About 4400 on the (NV80) 640MB 8800GTS (but it's on an opty so that is part of the difference)

To further the jacking of the thread - I have a GTX 260 on the way. Anyone have an idea how it crunches, PPD-wise? I would expect it to outperform the 8800GTs.

There is another thread here that answers that,
Look here
and we aren't jacking, as the op asked a question about ppd. If we were, I would have to hit myself ! 😉

Thanks for the link, Mark. I had seen the thread that you provided the link to, and reviewed it, but no one has actually reported on GTX 260 production. Though of course one can estimate the PPD based on GTX 280 numbers.

You and Gravity and the other points leaders are an inspiration and target for the rest of us.
