Giving a dog away

Sadly, I have to give away one of my dogs (2 yr old female mini black lab mix). It's insanely hard to find a place / roomie that will accept 2 dogs.

I know that there are all kinds of sick people (esp. in NYC) so as a preliminary precaution I've asked for a $100 adoption fee - which will be a donation to a respectable animal shelter of their choice.

Are there any warning signs that I should look out?

Breaks my heart to do this, but I don't have much of a choice ...

Take the dog to a no-kill shelter. The $100 donation is a good idea though. If a sicko was after the dog, that would probably turn them off.

Yes, it is. Most adoptions cost $65-85 in NYC. This way I have a better chance that no psycho is going to adopt her. Only if someone really likes her (she a really friendly goofy dog), they'll adopt her ... I hope. She's a darling.

You could probably ask for a reference or two as well. I don't think anyone who wishes to do harm to the animal would go through the trouble. Also, people really interested in getting a dog will appreciate your efforts to make sure it goes to a good home. They'll be more confident that the dog is a nice dog.

Let them do the talking. You can tell soon enough if they are sincere. The dog will aslo have some input there. If they are worthy dog caretakers, the dog will warm up to them quickly.

MY Uncle had a dog that looked just like that. I loved that dog, unfortunately she got scare on 4th of July two years ago, jumped the fence and was ran over .
