Given up on Linux

are you bunrning to CD or DVD? I heard that since the distros are getting so big, that it would be better to burn to DVD. Just an FYI. I personally burn all my distros to DVD and install from those rather than burn to cd anymore.

Nope. I usually check the chips that are used to make certain that they are supported before I buy anything. Too many manufacturers don't want to bother with supporting liunx.

Linux is a bag of problems by itself... now imagine if it have to work together with hardware lol...

I have never had much luck with liveCD's so I pretty much always use the Ubuntu alternate CD for installing.

The error you are getting is specific to the Abit AB9 Pro.
It happens for everyone I have talked to who has the board, myself included.
Ubuntu 7.X versions work fine, but 8.X fails with the error you posted.

Redhat works without a problem if you want to give it a try.

FWIW, Arch apparently works too, it's text install and you'll have to install xorg and your gui afterwards, it's not hard though, just pacman -S xorg && pacman -S KDE (or gnome) or if you want to search, just pacman -Ss "packagename"

I recommend it strongly, the power of the rc.conf is removed in too many systems, look it up.
