Given up on Linux

So Ive tried 4 distros now, and only PCLinux OS will boot to Live CD, but loops on selecting disk for install. I also get this error:

error 23: Error while parsin number

With any flavor of Ubuntu (Mint, Ubuntu, Kubuntu) I get:

e.c.: usb_submit_urb(cntl) failed, errno=5. Wont even boot into Live

Ive redownloaded and reburned at 1x each distro. Im just lost or something maybe

/sigh

edit: I tried Mepis and was presented with a command line login instead of GUI lol... I think Im linux cursed 🙁

Odd that so many of them fail. Hardware specs would help. Are you sure you got the right version of the OS (PPC/x86_64/i386/whatever)?

Yes, and double checked when I re-downloaded them.

Abit AB9 Pro mobo
Intel C2D 6600
4 gigs Patriot memory (2x2) 5 5 5 15
Raptor 74 HD
WD Caviar 250 HD with seperate partition for Linux (ugh)

The other thing is, I almost get to the GUI, and in the case of Mepic got to CLI log in lol, grb is now installed. I noticed it flash briefly when rebooting. I also notice a new 8 gig "unallocated" space on my 250 gig drive...allocated by Live CD I presume.

I really wanna try one of these lol

I'm gong to put my bets on a video card problem. What kind of video card? Have you tried the alternate install CD for ubuntu? It uses a text menu based installer. I'm guessing the liveCD's are trying to use the wrong driver for your video. It may be a matter of getting linux installed, then installing the proper video card binary.

the error references usb

after poking around try this:

disable legacy usb support in the BIOS and use a ps/2 keyboard/mouse and see what happens

if you dont have those, make sure your bios is set to stop on NO errors (the default usually sets a bios to stop at least at no detected keyboard)

Than sir I'll try this.

OK have done the above, and even disconnected all usb devices...still no go. Ive re downloaded, checked checksums, did $media check on all distros, nothing. Tried 3 flavors last nite got no love.

Im thinking the only thing it could be is my media. Even though checksums and check media are good, its got to be bad burns. Im going to go and buy some ridiculously high priced media and try again tonite.

Man this is frustrating. Cant even boot into Live lol Ive made more coasters int he last week than in the last 3 years I think haha

OK. Im going to give this another shot this weekend. Im going to try xSauronx's advice. Im not going to do this LINUX SUCKS crap lol it doesnt, and I really want to learn it. I'll report back with any additional questions. Ive also looked at the Linux hardware compatibility database and all mine is in there.

tried again last night...disconnected all usb (even though live provides support for stuff), re downloaded, checked MD5, reburned Mepis, Mint, and PCLinusOS...no go. Im thinking the only thing it could be is bad burns. Im going out tonight and buy like some Maxell Gold or equivalent media, and a can of air to clean out the optical crap in my burner. I dont know what else it could be. Ive read Linux is picky on its burns...sooooo. Still not booting into Live, and $media check comes back fine.

Aaaarrrggggg

Try taking out a stick of ram. I've had OS installs fail all the time with 2 sticks of ram, but succeed with only 1 stick. You can install the other stick after the system is working.

your bios could be doing funny things with memory mapping with 4gb in there. i would either try a 64-bit livecd, or try it with 2gb of ram.

UPDATE: Got new media (Maxell Gold), removed 2 gigs of memory so now 2 gigs left...unplugged every USB device except keyboard and mouse, can of sprayed inside of DVD/CD writer for to clear any dust. Heres my results:

PCLinuX: Got it booted into Live
Kubuntu and Mint: got to keyboard and language select, then this:
[104.934995] ata5.00:revalidation failed errno=-5
[140.077627] ata5.00:revalidation failed errno=-5
[206.021996] ata6.00:revalidation failed errno=-5
[241.164638] ata6.00:revalidation failed errno=-5

then curser hangs on blank screen. Let it sit for 20 mins before rebooting with same result again.

Mepis: in minimal and standard mode:
failed to set xfermode9err_mask=0x40)
failed to recover some devices
retrying in 5 secs

then a bunch of scrolling with looking for cdrom in /dev/hdp(xxx), then:
Cant find MEPIS filesystem, sorry
Dropping you to a (very limited) shell
Press restart to quit
/static/ash:cant access tty;job control off
mepis#

that sucks

more googling around shows that when this board came out the 965 chipset wasnt working well with linux. id found a couple of instances of people getting it to work, some would get it to install and work, some would get it to tinstall then it would hange at boot time, and some couldnt get anything done with it.

problems appear to come (at least partially) from the jmicron ata controller. mostly

This is the only instance ive found of someone using this board successfully (so they say) with linux. and its actually not ancient (from june 2008)

kinda looks like youre probably out of luck with the AB9 🙁

Damn that sucks. I thought linux hardware problems were a thing of the past.

ugh. Thanks X I hadnt found that info before.

/sigh

On another note, I uninstalled MSOffice and installed Open Office yesterday without a hitch ROFL

Nope. I usually check the chips that are used to make certain that they are supported before I buy anything. Too many manufacturers don't want to bother with supporting liunx.

true. its a lot better than what it was. everything works great on my T60, even the fingerprint scanner. unfortunately the implementation for the scanner is lacking but hopefully that will get better in the near future since the scanner *does* work reliably. i just dont like using a password *and* a fingerprint both to do things.

Well I tried openSUSE and got to play with it in liveCD wow nice looking...but...when I rebooted it got stuck in a reboot loop

BLECH!

It looks like *some* of the P965 chipset crap *may* have been fixed in the beta kernal 2.6.27..I found Kubuntu beta release with it so will try. What a PITA lol Now Im doing it not anymore because I want to use linux, but so I beat this damn bug! lol

EDIT: No go. I can get Kubuntu 8.10 with new kernal onto Live CD but it wont install. Same with PCLinus OS. Thanks for the comments guys I'll have to wait till I rebuild and get a proper chipset.

/cry

That's weird. My P965 board works fine (Gigabyte) so I guess its a problem from a few manufacturers. What do you mean it won't install? What message did it give you?

I get the dreaded errno message

Hmm I don't know what to say. There are a few solutions that worked for different people in this thread on ubuntuforums, but it wouldn't explain why other distros are similarly experiencing problems. Some people threw out that it could be the CD-R media or the CD drive. Maybe you could try burning at a low speed or switching to other media or trying another cd drive?
