With the passing of RGB, there is, of course, a new Supreme Court seat open. Obviously last time there was a seat open during an election year the republicans argued that there shouldn’t even be a hearing for a nomination.

Of course we all know that was bull shit and now McConnell has already said he will give Trump’s nomination a hearing.

So if that happens does that mean it’s open season on the Supreme Court and the Dems, if they get the senate, can pretty much do what they want including expanding the court?

Go for it.

Something tells me it will ultimately just result in sawing off your own leg like when they passed Senate nuclear option.

Nah. I see them going after Kavanaugh. Unless the new one is worse and there is a reason to go after them.

That's a lot of work just to get fairness in the system. Leave the red states. Let Texas and Florida support the shithole deep south. They can have Ivanka Trump as their next president, we can have Warren. We'll help more advanced thinking blue voters repatriate.

Yesterday I was for ending the filibuster but not packing the court. Today, I'm for both.

One consequence of unconditional hatred from the right is that it doesn't matter what they say about whatever the dems do anymore. Just do it, and when they squawk, turn them off like a radio. I literally couldn't give two shits any more what anyone on the right has to say.

Won’t happen. They will never have enough votes to impeach a Supreme Court Justice. its A pipe dream.

You’re correct that they’ll never have enough votes to impeach a justice. That being said if they wanted to they could hold impeachment hearings based on Kavanaughs behavior during his confirmation and by claiming the Senate under Mconnells leadership failed in its duty to provide advice and consent.

They could then drag in any justice or judge they want for painful senate hearings. They could use their subpoena powers and the DOJ to investigate them and basically really make things painful. They may not be able to remove any of these McConnell appointed judges/justices but they can make them wish to quit. That may make other questionable candidates thing twice about applying for the job in the future.

Normally I wouldn’t suggest the Dems break norms this badly but I think to make things better the Dems will have to break things just as bad as the GOP has until both sides agree to play by the rules again.

If Trump appoints a Judge in time for the election, will you accept SCOTUS decisions in deciding the election?

If Dems pack the court in this climate there are exactly three plausible outcomes:

  1. Permanent rule of the Democratic party, if Democrats are sufficiently machiavellian and go for a naked power grab, installing enough partisans so that the supreme court will rubber stamp anything the party wants them to.
  2. Permanent Republican rule in the event that Democrats fail to take the kill shot. Democrats may or may not exercise restraint in packing the court. Afterwards ,if Republicans ever claw back control of the presidency and the senate, there will be retaliation and Republicans will not exercise any restraint whatsoever. They'll pack the court with the goal of a complete and permanent takeover.
  3. Civil war, likely in combination with 1 or 2.
People are insane if they want this. Likely, they haven't thought things through to their ultimate conclusions. We should all pray that the prerequisites for this nightmare scenario never come to pass.
