Launch prices of Nintendo consoles over time:

NES (1985) - $200
SNES (1991) - $200
N64 (1996) - $200
GameCube (2001) - $200

Anyone see a pattern yet? :p

Wii (2006) - $200

At least I hope so. :)

Whichever gets hacked to hell like the original Xbox - only reason I bought it is to use it as a HTPC type item.

Based on your pricing...

Wii $150
Xbox Premium $400
Total $650

PS3 Premium $600

Umm yah I'd have to say go with the Nintendo + the Xbox Premium is more of a mathematically sound decision. I think your price point for Wii is off but in the scenario provided I would definately go that route.

NES, SNES, N64, GC: competing directly with the top competition.
Wii: NOT competing directly with the top competition.

Compare the next generation home consoles to the DS vs. PSP battle.

It's not?

I don't think Nintendo wants their target audience to be kids. Particularly since the downloadable retro games are a big feature of the Wii. Kids don't want retro games, adults do.

Nintendo isn't trying to outgraphic thier competition in the least. They're trying to make a fun consoles, with innovative games, that ARE NOT targeted towards the hardcore gamer.

Examples:
Brain Age
Nintendogs
Tetris DS

I'm not sure about the other two, but I am assuredly going to buy a Wii when it comes out.

As much as I was in love with mario and such back in the day (kirby too). I'd rather have an HTPC type dealy to double as a nice dvd player (i have a hdtv flatscreen). Plus, i love the fps games on xbox. Plus their Live gaming service is REALLY solid. It's great to have a bunch of friends just come over and pick up a controller to do some co-op missions in GRAW. Or do matchmaking with Halo 2. I would get Wii for my GF on the other hand...I just can't get myself to go and buy new mario games and such. I'd rather play them on my SNES and feel like a kid again then buy a new system to be an adult and playing kid games....

Right, they've always made fun, innovative games. If by "hardcore gamer" you mean people who are satisfied with the same old recycled crap, then you're right. ;)

Agreed. Smart tactic. I believe the fact that the PS3 is trying to out-tech EVERYTHING will be it's downfall.

I got the 360 premium which needs the PS3 premium for company. I didn't pay for the 360 though. Can lightening strike twice?

Because suckers will buy it regardless of that fact. By the time Sony actually releases PS3, you could probably buy 300-400GB HDDs for $100.

I dunno, I've never played any Pokemon games. Yes, they use the same characters in a ton of games, but the games are all different. Look at Mario - SMB 1, 2, 3 are all very different games. Same with Super Mario World, and Super Mario 64 couldn't be farther from the previous ones. Compare that to GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas... oooh, he can use a chainsaw in this one! :p And the Madden games that people pay big bucks for just to get updated rosters.

Console systems are nice, but I'd rather have the PC. I've got to have my keyboard and mouse.

Actually San Andreas and Vice City had big gameplay revisions (RPG like). Madden games are on all systems aren't they?

Yes, all Marios are very different.

I had to vote for Day of the Tentacle "just because". Anyway, I'd rather get a Nintendo Wii just because of the price, but it all comes down to what games are out there. I just feel spending $400+ on a gaming console is wrong.

$149 is definitely not realistic a price for Wii. The controller alone whould be worth $50. If you look computer gamepads, anything striving to have advanced capabilities cost far more. $200 should be realistic, with a $250 launch price, and a sudden price drop as part of the advertisement to exceed everyone's price expectations.
