What can I expect from this processor AMD? MOBILE ATHLON?64 3400+ CPU w/ Hyper Transport Technology ~ CNBC62 as apposed to Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB). I have narrowed it down to these two choices for my laptop. The main purposes for this laptop will be surfing the net, email, minor work, movies, games and streaming. When the laptop is at my home it will always be plugged in. When I take it on the road it will almost always be plugged in. I am try to find the best processor for this. Which processor would you recommend, thank you for your help. Also does anyone know a link to a laptop that has a AMD? MOBILE ATHLON?64 3400+ CPU w/ Hyper Transport Technology ~ CNBC62 processor, I cannot seem to find any. If you do know could you please paste the link, thank you.

I am going to have to recommend the Pentium-M

They are lighter, slimmer, & have better battery life.

The mobile A64s are nice, but they just aren't the best for laptops IMO.

true i think the turon is justa rebaged Athlon64 trying to compete with the dothan, like above if you are going to be on the move alot of the time, then battery life is you goal along with acceptable perfomance, and that is what the pentium M brings, so that is what i recommend ..

peace out .. A town ...

UHH, the Turion is more than a rebadged AMD 64. The 2.2 ghrtz 1024L2 cache processor is rated at 35watts. Pretty close to the Dothan at 25-28 watts. This Turion equal the Dothan in performance for sure and the energy used is much closer.

I wouldn't get any AMD64 mobile part except for the Turion if I could help it. The older 3400 part is a clawhammer at much higher watts than the Turions

i see ... but didn't i say "i think" not a statement is it (a wild guess more like it ;)) .. good info on specs tho .. although i did here around that it was just a rebaged Athlon 64, i dont really know nor either care for that matter, as i have didely squate interest with regards to mobile processors .. i did at some point when i wanted a Sony Vaio (God damn those things are shweet), and it had a 750/740 dothan i think

Review

If 3400+ mobile roughly equals 3400+ desktop, than based on these numbers and given your uses (ie lack of importance for battery life), probably go with the cheaper laptop.

I'd go with the Pentium M too, though I hate to say it. I <3 AMD.

I undervolt my Pentium M lappy, so it is passively cooled 90% of the time on the crappy dell heatsink inside my laptop (the fans only turn on when I'm gaming). It's freakin amazing. My CPU temps are usually 47-52 degrees with the fan off when web browsing and watching movies. When I game, and the fan turns on, and my temps drop to ~41/42 degrees.

I just flew from Michigan to the west coast of Canada, and battery life was realllly nice, I watched a movie and a half, listened to a bunch of music, and still had 30% left in my battery at the end of the trip (I even used my lappy during the layover in Chicago).

I love how NOBODY read what he said. It will be plugged in.

With that said the Athlon64 is a stronger CPU. So since you said it will be plugged in when used, then go A-64 for the raw power you will get.

So true.

For the intended use I don't think processor performance is going to be much of an issue. You might want to consider price, hard drive speed/performance, noise and durability instead of processor type to make your final decission. At least that is what I would do in your situation.

One more time, HE ASKED ABOUT THE PROCESSOR, stick to the Topic !!
The Pentium M came out of an Israeli Project if memory serves me correct. While is low power and performa OK it
just can't be compared to an A64. The "core" in the M is veryyyyyyy old. THE A64 is much newer design and will perform better with Win64.
My Son just bought a lappie with Hyperthreading P$ and that's a Screaming Eagle !!

If you're using a wall socket most of the time, battery life won't matter so much. I'd go with the AMD chip, to be honest.

If you had to use the battery more often, I'd recommend the Pentium M.

I know, because newer is apparently always better
please read the articles concerning P-M on desktop use

If its plugged in all the time... build yourself an SFF for 1/2 the price and more perofrmance. If you really want mobility for your always plugged in laptop... invest in a 50 cent handle.

Edit: I guess i should ask what you mean by "on the road" in a hotel room? or actually while driving? SFF would be great if youre just traveling a lot, if you are taking a bus or something need to use it while on the move, then a laptop is the best choice.
