Give me some book recommendations

I'd like to get a fun or interesting book for a female friend of mine. Any good thoughts?

And please, no Kama Sutra, porno, war or violent books.

Thanks

John Irving books are really good. Lots of character development which chicks seem to like. I'd recommend Cider House Rules, Prayer for Owen Meaning, World According to Garp, or the Hotel New Hapshire. All of these are solid books and well written.

Then, there's Douglas Adams and Hitchhikers Guide.

Donald Westlake writes good crime books about losers who never win. Any Dortmunder (he's the main character and will be listed in the book summary) book is a quality read and well worth the time you'll put in.

Ishamel - Daniel Quinn. Great, short book. It's an outside view of human civilization. One of my favorites

Bright Messangers and the sequel Double Full Moon Night are good reads. They have female lead characters. Its a good read if you are a fan of Gentry Lee and/or anything RAMA related.
