Give me pointers toward a rock solid and problem free cpu/mobo combo

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Anandtech's webservers run on MSi K7TPro's with 1Ghz TBirds. That should be stable enough for anybody.

Avoid the Pro2A the Via ATA100 south bridge seems to have quite a few problems, and you don't need ATA100 anyways...the Pro or Pro2 ATA66 boards should be more stable than you'll ever want.

You can set your RAM at 100Mhz or 133Mhz so your current RAM will be fine.

I don't know how fast your CPU is...maybe you want to keep that to and try for an i815E board...I'd say Asus or MSi for i815E boards.

The problem was the 686B southbridge, and the problem occured mainly with specific HDD's, the GXP series... I agree, the problem shouldn't appear with any drives, but it seems that the GXP series has problems with many controllers, the HiPoint is one controller that has problems with it, of course, this controller is in itself a major pain, but i just looked into the new Adaptec controller, and i also seems to have problems with it... Anyways, it seems as if VIA have solved the problem with their latest drivers...

I never liked the GXP series, this is no secret, i have tested too many drives to consider them stable, but that is just my experience, if you got it to work, that is great, i am not a brand idiot, i just report what i think after the tests i do...

Am speaking for PC Resources

The MSI K7TPro2 (not the Pro2A) is the most trouble free/stable SocketA mainboard I have used, the ASUS P3B-F the most stable BX mainboard I have used.

Having already got the IBM Deskstar 75GXP hard drive I was looking at updating my present motherboard and processer to the MSI k7T PRO 2A and a 900 thunderbird is this not a good idea and if not what are my more favourable options stability being of the upmost consideration.A new hard drive is not an option.

A supercomputer is being assembled by the University of Delaware using MSI K7T Pro motherboards. They chose them because they are the most dependable (evidently).

A lot of us have been waiting for a multiprocessor Athlon computer but I didn't expect the first one to have 132 1GHz CPUs. University of Delaware will be announcing Samson, an Athlon based supercomputer, which is expected to be among the 200 fastest supercomputers in the world. The motherboards are MSI K7T Pros, and each have 512MB of PC133 SDRAM. Now we know that the Athlons run hot, so you can imagine the cooling challenge. Special 1U chassis were made by RackSaver. Four cooling fans are used with three of them pointed directly on the CPU. Interconnects were made by Dolphin Interconnect Solutions. -Will Ryu

I would go with a tbird or duron of your choice and get an abit kt7 (any version, newer one allows better overclocking), asus a7v133 or a7v, and finally msi k7t pro2. In no specific order of course. I have always like abit though, just to throw in a little opinion. Since we're all made out of em anyways.

PCResources - I didn't say I hadn't tried any other platforms...

My recommendation still stands.

LXi,

The MSI, turbo m/b isnt out yet right? I looked at a few webstores and couldn't find it🙁
well if its really not out, err whats a price estimate?

I`m running the original MSI K7T Pro this board, it`s rock solid, btw also using SBlive,Geforce2 MX,so would recommend this board to anyone if you don`t care about overclocking, btw also a gamer & no problems found with this rig.

🙂
