Same thing with smokers, you put yourself at higher risk for a lot of illnesses. And most people either don't have insurance or enough to pay all the bills for it, so then it all gets kicked to me and other healthy tax payers.

Like smokers, heavy drinks, people that ride motorcycles without helmets, etc... If you want to do that fine, just sign a piece of paper that says you do not want ANY medical help when you get sick or injured.

Hoo boy am I going to be flamed for this. I met the founders at baycon, and some of the points they make are good. They are not necessarily defending the morbidly obese, they agree that people should not have excessive weight and should exercize and eat healthy. These people are not that fat, from what I've seen, just have an extra 30, 40 lbs on them. I'm not necessarily defending all their views, but they are not advocating shoving cheeseburgers down your throat.

"We're living in the middle of a witch hunt and fat people are the witches," said Marilyn Wann of San Francisco, a militant member of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. "It's gotten markedly worse in the last few years because of the propaganda that fatness, a natural human characteristic, is somehow a form of disease."

hahahhahahhaa. Yes, it is "somehow" a form of disease. More to the point it is a disease. Now get to managing it just like the rest of the world does with other diseases, lazy.

I don't wanna pay for your health problems related to obesity. Now lose some weight or fear the wrath of my lawsuit!!!

Spidey, if you want to be perfectly fair, getting fat isn't a disease, it means you have good genes. Unfortunately the genes that have adapted for a certain lifestyle(nomadic tribesmen) doesn't translate well into the modern world.

maybe, but if we can call everything else a disease (remnants of our nomadic ways) we can call obesity a disease.

heh - mark my words. There will be fat lawsuits and there most certainly will be a fat tax.

Wann depicts bariatric surgery as "stomach amputation" that imposes anorexia on patients and exposes them to long-term risks. Kelly Bliss, a self-described "full-figured fitness instructor" from Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, predicts that future generations will disapprovingly look back on stomach surgery as "comparable to lobotomies."

That's BS. People choose to have that kind of surgery and many will have serious medical problems if they don't.

The surgery itself is DAMN risky with anywhere from a 2% immediate to 12% later fatality rate. It should only be reserved for those with serious obesity problems (ie the people who cannot get out of bed). Being 200 lbs overweight and walking everyday is MUCH, MUCH safer.

won't happen, the male genes in my family include a dominant "skinny-as-a-rail" gene.

Even so, once you lose your metabolism, just change your eating habits...sure, you'll still gain a few pounds, but if you're 80 pounds overweight something is seriously wrong with you.

Southwest Airlines, for example, resisted protests targeting its policy of requiring large passengers to purchase a second ticket if they can't fit in a single seat.
Good for Southwest. No reason they should eat the cost of losing a seat to someone who has no self-control.

hello

I deliver pizza; I do not like fat people. Morbidly, obesely fat people who think they have a disease. I guess it's called Open Mouth Disease. I have drank over 400,000 ozs of beer in my lifetime and I'm about 15lbs overweight. Pride in one's self used to be the standard; now we have people grouping themselves off into catergories that shouldn't even exist. I am out-of-shape; not enough for me to work it off but never enough to complain about it to someone else AND comfirm my fatness. Ughh, this is a bad direction.

Awww I love you too.

Edit: You know I am not a vegetarian though, right?

I eat seafood. And to be honest, I predict that I will end up eating beef and chicken again in the next 4 years.

Apparently people in Europe don't lose their metabolism? Don't give me that sh!t. To many people are lazy!

I put on a few (10) extra pounds slamming back the oreos during the final 2 months of school. Once I realized, I went on a no cookie diet, cut back on the coke (replaced it with more beer), and have started running again. It's just a matter of getting yo lazy ass in gear.

hmm ... I only Weigh 275 pounds ... I wonder if I qualify

Perhaps I need some more bacon wrapped steaks with cheese.

It reads like a script idea for a South Park episode...lol. And the headline sounds like it came from the Onion.

Unbelievable.

This sounds kind of silly.

Yes, metabolism slows with age, but if you intend to stay in shape and avoid being fat, it's your fault for not doing so. Blaming your weight on a slow metabolism is just making excuses.

The fact that you know your metabolosm is sowing down means that you also know that it will take more effort to stay in shape than before. It's up to you to decide if the extra effort is worth it or not.

It's really just a choice. You're choosing being fat over the extra work. Or you're choosing doing what it takes over being fat.

I'm not trying to bash you or fat people. I just think you're using metabolism as an excuse. Either you want it enough to do what it takes, or you don't. You have to do what's right for you.

Also, I don't think the people here are reffering to having a few extra pounds and some flabbiness. In that picture there were some massively HUGE people that are well beyond just not being in good shape.
