The benzos they give dogs, cats and kids before traveling are basically the same. a normal level for a human is .25-.5 a dog will need .5-1 to relax.

Xanax is a stronger/less dosage required drug hence to low dosage.

thanks for the reply, klixxer.

No problem, remember that it is also a long acting drug so give him 1mg about one hour ahead and he will be calm and probably a bit sleepy.

The only thing to remember really is to wake him gently, the sleep induced by benzos can cause vivid dreams and he might get scared if you wake him too early or less gently.

The effects wear off completely within 6 hours, before then he will probably just want to sleep.

Actually it is quite possible to die or overdose from benzodiazapines. Please don't spout misinformation.

Xanax is not a long acting benzo, so please stop posting in this thread since you are posting misinformation. Xanax is one of the shorter acting benzos -- especially with the metabolism of a canine that weighs that much.

Sure, it is pretty safe, but the half-life of Xanax in a canine is quite low. You would only give him temporary fix, and then his sedation would pass. I don't think you should own a dog if you are not willing to take care of it. Take him with you or give him to someone who actually cares about animals. Now, if you want to take him with you and put him on Benzodiazapines then feel free. I'd reduce the dosage to a very low level however. I wouldn't give him more than .5mg per 100lbs.

maybe try reading the thread? i said im fully willing to stay in the garage if i have to to make sure theres no issues.

I did read the thread in its entirety, but I disagree with the way you are going about this. Carry your dog with you.

Call your vet to see what he/she recommends. I would advise against giving the dog Xanax.

then practice reading comprehension. i never said i wasnt taking the dog, only asking about giving him xanax for the safety of everyone (including my dog) staying there seeing as how this is the first time hes going through this, and i know he will be highly stressed.

for the record, i called the animal shelter today. they pretty much echoed what others in the thread have said. they suggested a half of the weak pill should calm him for ~6 hrs.

No it isn't, there is no amount of benzos in the world you will die from if you do not choke on them.

My ex GF worked as a psychiatric nurse and they got people in there taking 300+ times the normal dosage and they just let them sleep it off.

You should probably check real world results of overdosing on benzos.

Compared to Diazepam which is what a vet would use it IS a long acting benzo, we are talking about a dog and what is commonly used on a dog here, i would like you to provide a link to show how the metabolism of a canine will make it shorter acting than what is commonly used for canines (no, you can't bring barbs into the discussion).

I know you long to prove me wrong, so be my guest.

One of my friend's dad is a vet. Back in high school she told me how he'd prescribe her portions of horse medication instead of taking her to the hospital. In her words, "It's the same thing!"

Jump ahead ten years. I'm back home to visit my mom and my friend has a severe infection. We go to a drive-through pharmacy and she's complaining about the wait and wants to go to her father's office to raid the medicine cabinet.

It's the South, of course.

Well, it IS the same thing just in different dosages, and the pellets won't work of course as the human digestive system won't be able to digest it.

An anti-inflammatory for a horse is just higher in dosage, other than that it is the same thing, same goes for anti-histamines, sedatives, several hormone medications, penicillin and painkillers.

If you're that concerned about him biting someone I would just go buy a muzzle.

So you'd give them to your kids too? :D

Diazepam(Valium) has a roughly 4 times longer half life comapred to alprazolam(Xanax) in humans and I see no reason why this would be much different in dogs. You have clearly showed many times in this thread that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about so please stop spouting misinformation before someone listens to you and does something stupid.
