Anyway, I'll probably be done compiling and installing by the end of the week. Yay me!

What kinda firewall do you run, router, proxy, shorewall, what?

I run linux box with shorewall.

I have a port open for vnc (so I can vnc to my box when I'm at work)
Have a port open for swat, been working on that lately, want to get file server running as well as domain name controller.

Box servers as my gateway and for projects i'm working on 🙂

Wide open in other terms.

Funny thing is, in my /var/log/messages I constantly see different ips trying to access
an IIS server.

I would be in so much trouble if I was running a windows based gateway + IIS.

Not properly patched an IIS server is extremely vulnerable, and new vulnerabilities are discovered daily, the strange thing is, in this case MS cannot blame it on the hackers trying to hack by volume because there are a LOT more Apache servers out there than there are IIS servers.

If you really want to compile everything yourself (for no good reason) at least choose a distro where you will actually learn something, like Rock or do LFS.

I have tried compiling the lot and i do it constantly on other non Linux boxes but it does not get faster than -02 no matter how much you try, unless you are compiling for A64 of course.

I suggest ArchLinux instead, a lot quicker to install and you will be thrown right into the manual configuration, you will learn the config files in a heartbeat though, really not that complicated.

I like Slack and Arch, i like Slack because of the BSD like structure of filesystem and initfiles, i run a few FreeBSD and OpenBSD servers on different platforms so it makes me feel like home.
