17k, 34k with a masters? sounds like your gf isn't really motivated. hell even state employment pays more than that with less requirements.
 
How can an adult not have a driver's license? It should be a requirement for graduation high school. Even if you don't have a car you need to know how to drive and have the license to do so.

It really should be a requirement for graduating HS. It is a basic life skill in the US.

As far as the job goes, if ya’ll are in an area that is conductive to people not driving, then I would expect that they will be willing to work with her until she gets her license.
 
OP, if it is not written down, it does not exist. Verbal assurance does not count.

A driver license is not so hard to get. Teach her fast and get her a used car right away. Good luck.
 
this is not as bad as it seemed to be in the original post. be thankful it wasnt some license that takes years of study and professional testing to obtain

Is she 100% certain it's a driver's license they're looking for and not her teaching license (certificate)?

Sadly, though, I suspect it's a driver's license. I read "She finally lands a job working with an educational consulting firm that contracts out to cities to work with children who have autism" and immediately thought, "wow, she's going to be traveling around quite a bit."

I agree with alot of the above that you have to be a complete loser not to have a DL. I lived in the city and used transit and didnt own a car till i was 25 but still had a license before i was 17. You need one to work, its that simple, i have used it in well over 70% of the jobs i have ever had and would not have got alot of them if i idnt have a DL.
 
wow 17K a year masters degree employee? how much in education expenses to get her masters?? jesus i know people with associates degrees who make 70K.

I am about 90% certain that if her job required her to transport kids, they would require at least a 3 year clean driving record and that would have been requested and reviewed as part of a background check.

If her job does not require her to drive, then the most an employer can require is, "do you have a reliable means of transport to work?" Beyond that they cannot dictate.

I think it is highly likely that they are asking for a driver's license as a shortcut to filling out her I-9 form, which requires a form of primary identification. There are alternatives.

In her shoes, I would call the HR rep and first clarify if I am expected to drive on the job. If no, I would inquire about why they are asking for driver's license. If for purposes of identification, ask what other documents are available as an alternative (there is a standardized handout you can simply Google online that will tell you this too.) If they have another reason for requesting this and it is a legit reason, discuss her plans for obtaining her driver's license.

Worst case scenario, driving is a part of the job requirement and she's screwed, but that seems very very unlikely if they did not background check her driving record.
 
That stinks. Times are rough and $17k, jeebus, my 16 year old nefew makes more than that working at Mcdonalds.
