Girlfriend killed by lightning minutes before Knoxville man's proposal

The weather may have been perfectly fine when the started out.

From Mosh's link:

As Butler and Lott drove up toward a parking lot beneath the bald, the pounding rain briefly let up.

“She said that’s the difference between me and everyone else,” Butler said. “When other people would see the rain and turn around, I go looking for sunshine and grab it when I find it.”

As Butler and Lott hiked toward the top of the bald, bad weather quickly returned, and there were three quick lightning strikes, said Butler, who suffered second-degree burns.

As sad as this story is, they did go climb a bald mountain with thunderstorms around. Not very smart...

I love people admonishing hiking while in a thunderstorm. How much hiking do you actually do, guys?

Not as much hiking as I used to do, but I do remember last year in the rocky mountains, the rule was to be on the way down before noon. Lightning strikes above the treeline are not a joke. The parks usually have warnings about the lightning, and they should have known the danger. Still a horrible story, but when the weather gets bad, get off the top of a mountain.

I hike a ton. One time we had to cancel a trip (one where we won the lottery for permits months in advance) because there was predicted to be a lightning storm.

Reminds me of that sunrise guy:

"Her last words, about 30 seconds before it struck us, she turned to me and said, 'God baby, look at it. Isn't it beautiful?'" Richard Butler says.

If that isn't a sign from the heavens that she wasn't right...I don't know what is.

BUT, I'd suspect she was well grounded in her love for nature...

Story doesn't say... were they hiking in a thunderstorm? Or did lightning come right out of a clear sky? If so it's possible he needs to stop worshiping Zeus because his girlfriend got smited.

I hear he's out for revenge.

Truly sad though.

"My wonderful but flighty gf is dead," he moaned.

"If only she'd been more grounded."

I'm shocked and dismayed at the lack of compassion here. Making stupid jokes over a dead person isn't right.

I agree. This was supposed to be a special day for this couple, one that ended in tragedy. Discussing whether it was smart for them to go out in a storm? Fine, that part is open for debate. Making fun of them? Not cool imo.

Sad story, in large part because they both had a great attitude toward each other. Sometimes the realization that you're meant to be together hits like a bolt of lightning...
