so she finaly made a desition " lol after talking to apple dude " abouth her first laptop would be a mac ( only used windows previously ) but the deals is this.
we only have like 1500 to burn. and prices are: 999 for the ibook 12 inch ( witch she liked ) a 1499 for the powerbook 12inch withch i found nicer so this is what i wana know

with school discount ( get it from one university ) whats the price? and the deal, since she doesnt go to the univeristy would this be a problem when u need to send it to apple if it brakes. she has a friend that goes the utep but this is her last semester so.

we wanted a windows based laptop but if we got windows would need to run the new vista so it had to be a big laptop or a hela expensive small one.

I'm in Canada and 1249 becomes 1199 (ibook 12') and 1899 becomes 1766 (powerbook 12') with the educational discount.

Looking at most US schools the standard education store discount seems to be $100 off for the powerbook 12'. Kind of a joke when you think about how much tuition costs.

Apple laptops are WAAAY underpowered compared to the "average" Centrino-based laptop. You can get a much better ( but maybe not better-looking ) laptop if you stick with Intel. The Dell mid-range ( like 6000 or 700m ), Sager, Toshiba, or IBM/Lenovo would be better choices. Keep in mind that Apple's notebooks use the G4 which is slower clock-for-clock than a G5. You'll also be stuck with proprietary software.

Dell has 25% coupon discounts all the time on their notebooks. Here is a link. EDIT. I guess links are not allowed anymore, ( I get a sensored message ) so you will have to Google for Techbargains or "Dell coupons" and find the Techbargains link.

Dell has a 25% discount until the 6th on notebooks $1499 and up. Just configure you a 6000 or m700 until you reach $1500 then use the coupon code at checkout. V8VL9$7NSHWJ1T

well its for the girlfriend and she cares for looks, small form factor and ligth. to begin with.
told to get the gateway 4000 atlhon 64. 1000mb ram. 100hd. ati rad x600 at 1200 dls. and that would def be the most powerfull for the money under 1200 dls we can get and will most certainly will run windows vista in adequate manner.

she liked the ibook 12 inc look, the powerbook 12 she didnt liked.

the task she will be runing will be like word, powerpoint, msn messenger :p, firefox, il install her photoshop cs witch i dont think she will use cause apple has one basic photo editing software no? and watch dvd's

lol and also..

would my downloaded movies " u know weird stuff like divx, matroska and weird codec stuff" can run on the ibook?

im thinking the rad 9550 would be enough for her for a couple of years. i know the ibooks is hela underpowered but she wont be runing autocad or 3dmax on it

ordering online is not option since we live in mexico " juarez " next to el paso tx. so we can go get it from bestbuy or compusa but not order one online.

YOU ARE WHIPPED.

Okay at the risk of having this marked as a useless post I'll have to say j/k :) and that Apples are incredibly sexy. I saw way more ibooks than windows based laptops on my campus and I guess they're popular for a reason cause of that and because they're easy to manage and maintain than Windows. Seeing as how you download movies, I'll guess you download software too... just to remind you you could do that for Apple too. Although Jobs said pirates will burn in hell. what a kidder!

The Powerbook looks nicer in my opinion and its screen is brighter, too, but this comes with a price tag...

There are some Video Players (RealPlayer, Windows Media Player and Quicktime aside):
Video Lan Client
MPlayer

Codecs:
3ivx D4
FFusion (ffmpeg)
XviD (Quicktime extension)

VLC claims to play Matroska containered files, but I've seen mixed feedback about its ability to do so. If it doesn't work you can try to pull the content out of the Matroska format with this. DivX should be no problem.

My fiance has a 12" PB, and her sister has a 12" iBook. Out of the two the PB looks cooler (to me), but the iBook has MUCH better airport reception, and much better battery life.
