Mississippi poster here. I was born and raised in MS and I have no problems with same-sex prom dates. Itawamba is in the NE part of the state near the Alabama state line. It is not as populated as the MS area near Memphis, Central MS where the capital Jackson is located, or the coast where the casinos and many residents live. In general the less populated areas are devoted to agriculture and not such a progressive way of life.
Jackson has a pretty large gay community in the Belhaven area and supports a few gay bars. And no it isn't uncommon to see interacial couples most anywhere I go.
A lot of the stereotypes brought forth in this thread are fairly ironic. You are streotyping a state that you think stereotypes gays and people of other races. That's irony at its best.
While our state is behind the times, the issue with this came up that there was existing ban on same sex partners at the prom. She challenged the ban and the school system's answer was to cancel the prom.
I know at our prom in high school several us just showed up. I didn't want to take a date b/c I didn't want to waste the money on dinner and extras. I think I had just broken up with some girl I dated for like a year too. Anyways, my point is I'm sure her and her partner could have gone to the prom and more than likely it wouldn't have been a big deal. Instead, she was more intersted in getting the ban reversed instead of actually going to the prom. I guess even lesbians like drama.
