Mississippi poster here. I was born and raised in MS and I have no problems with same-sex prom dates. Itawamba is in the NE part of the state near the Alabama state line. It is not as populated as the MS area near Memphis, Central MS where the capital Jackson is located, or the coast where the casinos and many residents live. In general the less populated areas are devoted to agriculture and not such a progressive way of life.
Jackson has a pretty large gay community in the Belhaven area and supports a few gay bars. And no it isn't uncommon to see interacial couples most anywhere I go.
A lot of the stereotypes brought forth in this thread are fairly ironic. You are streotyping a state that you think stereotypes gays and people of other races. That's irony at its best.
While our state is behind the times, the issue with this came up that there was existing ban on same sex partners at the prom. She challenged the ban and the school system's answer was to cancel the prom.
I know at our prom in high school several us just showed up. I didn't want to take a date b/c I didn't want to waste the money on dinner and extras. I think I had just broken up with some girl I dated for like a year too. Anyways, my point is I'm sure her and her partner could have gone to the prom and more than likely it wouldn't have been a big deal. Instead, she was more intersted in getting the ban reversed instead of actually going to the prom. I guess even lesbians like drama.

I guess you missed the part where they threatened to throw her and her girlfriend out if they caught them slow dancing together.

Proms and dances and crap should just be thrown out. Has nothing to do with school. A whole bunch of extra crap thrown in that students put their minds into instead of on their studies. If they want a party, let the kids hold, and pay for their own.

Pretty sure they don't want special treatment, just equal treatment.

You seriously trying to reason with someone like that? :D

I guess I don't get the mentality I see on here all the time from people like that, as if we're asking people to bend over fucking backwards. (mmm delicious double entendre). Gay people just wanted to be treated like everyone else, how you yourself want to be treated... pretty sure that's in the good book somewhere these people all worship.

Sure, as soon as you gun-toting, bible-thumping bigots start treating everyone equally.

I don't think this post is helping dispel any stereotypes about Mississippi :)

Nice post. I'm in NY, I used to buy into the stereotypes myself. Then I noticed that every time police used a black person for target practice it was in NY or LA. Then the worst president in the US's history and an embarassment to our nation came (originally) from Connecticut. Then California passed prop-8. In comparison, having the biggest issue being discrimination at a high school prom seems almost... progressive o_O

My post about MS was not to insult the people of the state, just the state of some of its people. :p

That is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. What happened to being free to opinion and expression?

It is a true condemnation of the supposed technical prowess of ATOT that no pics of the hot girlfriend have been posted.

I'm in NY too and have a good friend from MS who lives up here. Yeah, she's a bit of a jesus freak but has absolutely no problem with gays or gay marriage, and her roommate here was a flamer.

Small towns is small towns, son (and we all support the team).
