what I don't get is when 9/11 happened the Response was awesome, even though many of the brave firey's perished in the collaspe they were still there helping as it happened, everybody who could help was there.
I watched the rescue effort on TV all the way across the pacific, I have a massive respect for those in NYC.
Now I turn on TV and all I see is the Violence and carnage of what is happening in NO, what the hell happened in those 4 years to go from such heroics to not much better than watching animals fighting over scraps of meat?

It is hardly comparable though.

See with 9/11, it was a direct attack on our country. It was a attack against our national pride, a test against our patriotism. We had firefighters and policemen risking their lives to rescue victims of an assault. There was no warning. It wasn't natural.

But with New Orleans, this disaster happened because of stupidity. The hurricane was just a nuisance. The real problem happened be 1. people refused to evacuate and 2. the governor and mayor did not update the dikes even when they knew they were due to fail. Then the whole communication gap between mayor -> governor -> president. Mayor was asking for help, and the governor didn't want federal assistance. Then while water was rising you got people looting which is not how you get sympathy from the rest of the nation. And then prisoners are let go, which is sure way to make the whole situation much more dangerous to the rescue operations.

There is nothing heroic in the NOLA rescue because situation was completely self-inflicted.

Sorry man but that is a load of crap. You only think that because you were outside of the whole situation watching the news who constantly chanted that it was a direct attack on the US from terrorists. If you were in the situation at hand, you would think absolutely nothing other than survival of yourself and loved ones instead of being some patriotic hero. I don't buy that bullsh*t not one bit.

Haven't you heard? No trouble is being caused by the refugees, it's just propaganda being spread as part of the vast right-wing conspiracy.

Hope they catch the assholes that did it, and that your friend recovers quickly.

It's not part of any conspiracy, it's a symptom of our cultures desire to lay blame and therefore responsibility on someone or thing other than themselves.

Thousands of bad AND good people were dsplaced, crime WILL happen.. do we buckle down and resolve the problems? Or do we cast our gaze backwards and blame the problem on past social inequities.

You can't say all the displaced are criminals, and no one should be saying "poor NOLA victims".

OMG I'm having a P&N moment... I REALLY need a drink 🙁

90000 squared feet of carnage, the whole city is devastated. You can't compare this with the response in 9/11.

And the people affected are a completely different class of people. The people of middle class and up have places to stay. My neighborhood is full of LA license plate vehicles staying with relatives and friends. The low class dregs of he earth are the ones causing all the problems...but they caused problems before the disaster. The 9/11 tragedy happened in a high class part of the city and affected people of means. They are not comparable.

I went to the Wally World in Zachary a few times while up there last week.

It was completely overrun and out of everything.

These small towns better bulk up their police forces quick.

A handgun wouldn't've done any good in this case, I suspect. Two muggers up close. They would just be better-armed muggers now.

Normally, yes, I'm all for concealed carry, but from what I read of this situation I suspect that it would not have helped.

They did it because George Bush doesn't care about them...

You beat me to it. If only George Bush had gotten there in time to stop the mugging....

Assuming this is a true story, my sympathies to your friend.

Time to move to Baton Rouge so I have an excuse to buy a gun and carry it loaded with the safety off.

Its really not that bad here. The only real problem is the size of the population. Traffic, grocery stores, etc.

I know, it's just I want to be a real life Frank Martin and I can't very well rationalize carrying a loaded handgun to the Wal-Mart in a suburb of Dayton, OH. 😀

IShe went there to get groceries at like 3 in the morning.

You could have stopped right there.

I can go to Wal-mart at 3am with no fear of being mugged.

Are you a young, attractive female? (I have no idea).

If so, good for you that you live on the rich side of town. It's still stupid and risky, especially since most Wal-Marts aren't located in safer parts of the city.

I feel bad for the girl, but that's just stupid. Have some common sense.
