Does anyone remember 7 year old being suspended for drawing stick gun? Apparently hugging is now deemed equally as dangerous.

Girl, 13, gets detention for hugging two friends
Illinois middle school bans public displays of affection; parents urge change

MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter.

The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.

?I feel it is crazy,? said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.

?I was just giving them a hug goodbye for the weekend,? she said.

Megan?s mother, Melissa Coulter, said the embraces weren?t even real hugs ? just an arm around the shoulder and slight squeeze.

?It?s hilarious to the point of ridicule,? Coulter said. ?I?m still dumbfounded that she?s having to do this.?

District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.

It states: ?Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved.?

Parents urge change in policy
Coulter said she and her husband told their daughter to go ahead and serve her detentions
because the only other option was a day of suspension for each skipped detention.

?We don?t agree with it, but I certainly don?t want her to get in more trouble,? Coulter said.

The couple plan to attend the next school board meeting to ask board members to consider rewording the policy or be more specific in what is considered a display of affection.

?I?m just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn?t be punishing us for hugs,? Megan said.

No real comments, I'm still at awe at Superintendent comment. One would think it was some policy that "slipped" through, but seems this one is for real.

You weren't kidding about someone needing a hug....wow.

same thing happened here in Virginia about six months back - same no-hug policy. I don't recall how that was ever finally resolved though. Remember it being a big stink on the news.

It's funny that only now do the parents want to attend a board meeting. Where were they when the rule was proposed and voted on?

ok thats just wrong.

i understand why they have it. they don't want kids makeing out in the hallway clogging it up.

but sheesh.

I see your point... but a lot of times, parents have no idea what the board is doing or when they deciding these things in the first place.

IMO, no one in their right mind would vote for this rule with the language "public shows of affection"... so parents are probably thinking things are cool until something idiotic like this happens then they realize that the school board is full of nut jobs and start participating in order to right the ship.

The district superintendent, et al, need to be slapped with a trout... a big trout.

?Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved.?

That is one of dumbest things I have ever read.

You know I agree with you here. All those signs up everywhere to tell me to vote for this and vote for that and I don't even know who I'm voting for and I feel bad. I'm sure the common excuse is because we have no time for such a thing. More often than not though it's true.

I think this was probably the MAIN reason, and it's easier just to say all public displays of affection are banned.

Of course, why wasn't this voted against before this action? No parent reads the student handbook? (of course not).

Where I went to school, the teachers and principal and the like used a little thing called "their discretion" when determining the application of the rules.

How long before that "school policy" includes a burqa?

"school policy does not allow tight clothes or skin showing of any kind. any girl found with short sleeves shirt, any kind of skirt, or tight pants will be given for capital punishment. all students must wear space suits that cover every inch of their bodies. Breathing air is not allowed and students must carry their own oxygen tanks. Breathing fresh air reflects badly on the school"
