CHICAGO - A 5-year-old Chicago girl who never awoke from her sedation during a visit to the dentist died Wednesday at Children's Memorial Hospital, a hospital official said.

Kindergartner Diamond Brownridge had been in a coma and on life support since the weekend dentist visit, said Julie Pesch, a spokeswoman for Children's Memorial Hospital.

Family members have said Diamond received a triple dose of sedatives ? an oral agent, an intravenous drug and nitrous oxide gas ? during Saturday's exam at Little Angel Dental. The girl was having two cavities filled and caps placed on her lower front teeth.

The girl's mother, Ommettress Travis, has said she was asked to leave the room during the half-hour procedure. When she returned, her daughter was lying in the dental chair, not breathing, Travis said.

The girl's dentist, Hicham Riba, was certified to administer anesthesia to patients and his state license was current, said Susan Hofer, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Speaking to the Chicago Sun-Times before the girl died, the 40-year-old Riba said he was traumatized by what happened. "I don't think I will ever go back to a normal life after an experience like this," he said.

The telephone rang unanswered at Riba's home Wednesday night.

Yeah, there's always some risk when they put you under... sad. :(

I hope this doesn't turn into yet another lawsuit.

sure it will. sadly people do not read what they sign (you do sign a waiver when being put under).

i do feel for the parents though. odds on this happening are low =(

Why would he sedate a little girl *that* much......

Christ she could have gotten .5mg of versed plus nitrous and a local around her gums for the same effect.....

It will, and rightfully so. The triple anesthesia seems a little excessive.

a tiny bit of Lidocaine would do the job... what was the last time you heard of someone getting general anasthesia to fill caps?

anyways, I feel bad for the dentist too.... I mean, he was operating on a dead person without knowing. I sincerely hope he will not follow what the two ex-Sago miners did.

When I had my wisdom teeth out I got Versed/Propofol IV push and then Nitrous, and then a local nerve block. It's not that excessive as you think....however, on a child that smal you need small small doses! Probably accidently ODed the girl.

Scary, I was put under at that age to have four teeth pulled and two teeth capped.

When giving anesthesia for dental procedures, I usually start out with a small does of midazolam and follow it up with a bolus of propofol about a minute before the dentist puts the local block in, the propofol wears off and the local block prevents any pain while the midazolam keeps them sedated through the usually short procedure.

you've obviously never worked with kids in a healthcare setting. some of them can get pretty wild.

Would you give anesthesia to a 5yr old girl that was already sedated as stated above? Wouldn't that be extreme overkill?

If the guy followed proper procedures, no lawsuit is justified. We don't know why he put her under, but it's a fair bet that it was a last resort. She's five years old, maybe she was screaming uncontrollably?

when I was a kid (age 8-10 I forgot), I literally kicked and screamed when them dentists tried to clean my teeth with some kind of really nasty tasting chemical. It took a whole team of them to hold me down and the whole procedure took 2 hours. My mom is still embarrassed about the incident. They did not sedate me... maybe they should.

but later on, at age 12, I had a tooth removed; the dentist gave me 2 syringe shots in the gum and that's all he did. Granted, I was still in pain as he yanked the tooth out. (the 2 shots hurted like hell though!)
