Finally, PacFanWeb chips in with "she could never play with the top HS boys". If you are calling the players present at the McDonald's HS all star game the top players, then yes, I'll agree that she would be the worst player on the court if she played with that group - however, she could play, and start, and do very well, for 99.9% of all boys HS basketball teams in the country. Oak Hill? Probably not. Just about anywhere else? For sure.
First of all, I said REALISTICALLY, she could not play with the top boys.
But could she start for 99.9% of all HS boy's teams? No way. Even if she is a freak, like Michelle Wie, she wouldn't be that good.
But could she play for a fair amount of boy's teams? Sure. IF she is a one-off player, like Ms. Wie, and not just a chick who can jump really well.
Remember, we're talking about a DUNK contest, not real basketball. I don't care how well she can jump, she would be abused if she actually was playing in a game, a real game, not the Mcd's game...that's just an all-star crap-fest.
I think it's great that she was able to hang with some of the boys in a unique situation....it'll be good for the women's game. But don't think that even the top women can EVER play with even decent men.
The WNBA champs couldn't beat a decent boy's HS team on a regular basis. I'm not talking about Oak Hill, I'm talking your local high school team.
Remember, the best of the best WNBA players went out balling at the playground when the league started, and they couldn't even beat playground scrubs all the time.
I doubt that the WNBA champs could even stay within 30 pts of most any of the boy's teams around here.
As far as Michelle Wie is concerned, she is a one of a kind freak. We should enjoy seeing her play, and I hope all this pressure at such a young age doesn't mess her up for life. She can most certainly play with the men, but again, she is a freak of nature, and is not the start of masses of girls joining the PGA tour.
