Gingerbread 2.3.3 now syncs your music to . . . some kind of cloud-like thing

WhiteWidows went as far as waiting for his entire music collection to sync, then removed his SD card and swapped it out with a blank one to see if he could still play his music. Sure enough, he could. From the cloud.

Neat. Curious to know more of where its being synced to. And what happens when the RIAA sends Google a DMCA notice for MP3s sync'ed to their cloud?

With the providers moving to data cap'd plans they probably won't care. In fact this could make them money when all of the users end up going over their cap.

How is this any different than streaming Pandora, Last.fm, spotify, etc to your phone? I really doubt carriers will be up in arms now that Google is doing it. The RIAA however might not be happy unless Google has a deal in place with labels that they haven't revealed.

There is a major difference... this isn't about "use". It is a "feature" that can easily cause many GB worth of usage. The ONLY way this will last is if the cell phone companies keep it to get fees from going over in usage. This will of course raise hell with consumers when their phone is uploading multiple GB without them knowing.

Yes it can. You can toggle it just like you can toggle whether you want to sync Gmail Contacts/Calendar/etc.


Btw, this feature does not need Gingerbread. My Streak is on 2.2 (StreakDroid 1.8.1, which includes the Honeycomb Music app) and over the weekend something was suddenly draining my battery like crazy and I was pulling my hair trying to find out what caused this. Then someone pointed out to check this setting and sure enough, it's been actively syncing my music. I turned it off right away and my battery problem seems to be gone.

The question I have , is why would anybody want to do this? I suppose if you don't have a lot of space for music and you have unlimited data, then I could understand it. But memory isn't that expensive to add to your phone.. .and especially as tiered data useage plans are starting to be come closer and closer to being a reality wouldn't you rather have the music local on your phone instead of constantly streaming everything?

To answer my own question further I suppose it would also come in handy if you listen to your music from multiple locations... you could upload it once and it would play everywhere.

I still think I'd rather have it local.
