GIMP is not for the faint of heart or the retarded of mind.

GIMP's UI was made by the retarded of mind.

Oh, but wait, it is open source software so nobody can ever, EVER criticize it.

This is what I hate about a large portion of open source community. It is like written somewhere in their code book "Our software can't be bad and the competition can never be competent".

Photoshop is a good product. GIMP does have a lot of functionality, but a bad user interface.

OpenOffice has to compete with Microsoft's version and offer me something compelling for me to choose it. Since I can get 2010 for $9.99 cost is out the window. Speed and functionality are not even close so the program loses.

Link please. I'd be interested. Unless its a usenet subscription.:ninja:

Edit: also Photoshop = $800, gimp= $0. What proportion of photoshop users do you think have actually payed for it?

It's through their Home Use Program, the Navy and USMC subscribe to it so Navy and USMC personnel get it for $9.99.

#1 reason to install open office -> export word document to PDF. I always send out resumes and cover letters in PDF.
Outside of that.... umm... I don't even know.

CutePDF writer. In Word (or anything really) I can print a document to PDF.

Photoshop Elements. $80.

Or if you know someone who's a student, you can usually get it at a huge educational discount. My wife was able to buy Adobe CS for under $200 (and that includes Photoshop, Illustrator, and others).

Yeah, but they can only get one student discount ever on Adobe products.

It won't deselect if you click inside the selection, nor does it deselect if you click outside the canvas.

Menu Bar | Select | None (Shift+Ctrl+A)

This will deselect. Sometimes there is a bug that will not allow deselection. Then I select another selector tool from the Toolbox and try clicking outside of the selected area. If that does not work, I save and close the image, then restart GIMP only to find the area remains selected in the saved image.

Most complaints leveled at GIMP seem to be from long time Photoshop users unwilling to learn new software and expect the free software to be functionally exactly the same as the pricey software. Just free.
This is what I've seen as well. GIMP works fine if you take the time to learn how to use GIMP, instead of thinking you can jump right in like you've used it your entire life because you are familiar with some similar software.

That right there tells me that you have no clue what photoshop does.

Which tells me you have no idea what GIMP does.

Do you seriously think anyone other than the ~0.2% of professional PS users even know about an 8-bit color depth limitation, much less care about it? Or CMYK color printing?

If you're not being paid to use Photoshop, then GIMP is pretty much a 99% solution for comparative features. The rest is personal preferences and UI.
