I thought I'd save a little money back using GIMP instead of Photoshop for some very light graphic design work.

Wow, never in my life have I been more frustrated than with using GIMP. I know it's free, but everyone says how great it is. But it sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

I was able to achieve what I want to in Microsoft Photodraw 2000, an ancient graphics software, and with Microsoft Paint. GIMP did nothing for me.

That's all. I just wanted to rant.

Yup. GIMP is pretty horrible for something that is supposed to be similar to Photoshop.

Hell I'd take Photoshop 3.0 over any version of GIMP.

Yeah. I'm so freaking happy that my school autobundles Photoshop for me.

To all my friends and nerds who said that GIMP is superior to PS and rivals it in power and usefulness, fuck you.

GIMP isn't perfect, but it does most of Photoshop's features. It just has its quirks here and there that you need to learn.

Fwiw, I found Paint.NET to be the best simple free image editing/resizing/etc software personally. I don't do heavy use stuff though.

Quirks?

It's like they came up with ideas on how to make the most user un-friendly software possible and then rolled with it.

Yea for basic things I use paint.net
gimp was designed by retards.

This I agree with. I can TELL that there is the functionality to do a lot of the photoshop stuff, but the interface is so astoundingly retarded that I struggle to do even the simplest of tasks.

Want to just draw a circle? That will be 20 different clicks. Want to feather that circles edges? That will be another 20 clicks.

That and the whole "Lets have floating windows EVERYWHERE" thing is extremely annoying.

Gimp is pretty powerful, but when I used it in a pinch, a lot of tools were pretty unintuitive. But maybe thats because I'm (and a lot of people) are used to how photoshop has things layed out.

I think you mis-interpret the real use of GIMP. It is an image manipulation program, not an image creation program. It is for creating layers, morphing images, blurring selected parts, etc. It isn't for drawing things like a circle - that is for MS Paint.

There is a single-window mode in the next release. I do agree that part is annoying (especially when you close a window - like the layers menu - and there are no menu options to get it back you have to magicially guess the key combination to redisplay it).

Most complaints leveled at GIMP seem to be from long time Photoshop users unwilling to learn new software and expect the free software to be functionally exactly the same as the pricey software. Just free.

I use Paint.NET on Windows, and Pinta on Linux. They both do what I need them to do. I couldn't be arsed to learn Gimp, since I'd only be using a tiny percentage of it's features.

No, I'm pretty sure it just sucks. Just like OpenOffice.

Meh, GIMP is alright. It isn't a 100% photoshop replacement. I use it because I can't get approval for purchasing any replacement to the Photoshop Elements 5.0 suite we already have licenses for.

How do you figure that? OOo is my primary office suite, works great. At least, Writer, Calc, and Impress do. Base . . . not so much.

I suggest switching to LibreOffice. The project forked, and many of the devs left Oracle. They've also included patches from the Go-OO project which were rejected by Sun. It's on it's first release, and it's already better than OOo. I expect development to go much faster now.

I have to agree with a lot of people hear, GIMP can really suck sometimes. Whose idea was it to make changing your brush size so incredibly annoying (you have a certain number of default brushes, but to change the size you have to change the "scale". Say I want a brush size of 124.
OK, looking at the circle brushes they are all odd, well that's a bit annoying. I know, I'll use the brush size 1 and scale it by 124.... Oh, scale only goes to 10...
OK, I'll pick the largest circle brush... that's 19, so now i need to multiply that by 124/19... hmmm, *pulls out calculator* , that's about 6.53. Put 6.53 into scale...)

But it is quite powerful. However, if all you need is some basic editing, and maybe some layering, go with something like Paint.NET and save yourself the headache.

The most frustrating thing is that the list of things that GIMP can do is pretty good, it just needs some serious rethinking of how to make some basic things much more intuitive (I think the brush size example is pretty indicative of the types of design problems GIMP has)

I have no problem with Gimp. It does what I need it to do, which isn't much.

Should also be noted that with a free, open source application, your right to complain is pretty much nonexistent. Don't like it? Grab the source and change it. Or use something else.
