I don't find humor about dying on this level to be funny, The whole too soon thing makes no sense to me. Regardless of if you laugh at it now, or 2 years down the road, it's the same thing in my eyes.

I totally despise Gilbert Gottfried...I've never been able to stand his brand of humor...and if this means he'll be on the television less...then this is good news.

HOWEVER, I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with making that kind of jokes. YES, it's a terrible tragedy of epic proportions...and thousands and thousands of people are/have died...but that never makes jokes about the tragedy off limits.

Hell, I remember jokes about the Challenger accident being bandied about within hours of the disaster.
"Christa McAuliffe told her husband, "You feed the dogs, I'll feed the fish.", and that sort...While it may be offensive to some, humor is a good way to cope with tragedy.

I agree that humor is a great way to cope with tragedy. But I can't think of any cases, regardless of "too soon" where humor about people who have lost their lives is ever tasteful. (In which cases, it's not a matter of coping with tragedy.) Perhaps that's why I found Gilbert's comments to be very distasteful, but genuinely laughed out loud about the sushi joke posted later in the thread. The difference - the sushi joke doesn't directly reference the suffering and loss of life.

I had no idea Gottfried was the Aflac duck voice....makes sense now that I think about it.

For my thoughts on this particular tweet, see my signature.

I would say they should get president palmer or James Earl Jones to do the voice now.

I think he just knows he can get attention with stunts like this. The jokes weren't even good no matter the timing anyway.

Too bad. Gottfried has the perfect voice for annoying birds :D

Didn't realize he was the Aflac duck. I have a couple of the plush toys so I can squeeze them if I want to hear his voice, lol.

Comedians always walk a fine line when they make jokes like that. I can't say I feel sorry for him.

Gilbert does this all the time. He is hilarious because he doesn't give a shit...about anything. That's him. And Aflac should have known that when they hired him. The ONLY thing that makes Gilbert uncomfortable is if you start asking about how his kid is doing. lol

As for the firing, I doubt Gilbert gives a shit. He has a SHIT TON of money and never spends a dime. He is EXTREMELY tight.

He had to tell them now. In a few months everyone will forget about what happened and then no one will understand the joke.

Why? THAT seems perfectly appropriate.

We've been talking shit about Godzilla here since it happened...and there are even a few pics posted in the earthquake thread.

He's trying to cope with tragedy and you're being a dick to him. Why you gotta be like that?

Being positive all the time is what I've always liked about the internet. You turn on TV and all you hear is how you're going to get raped or godzirra is going to kill you. On the internet, it's other people being raped and other people being raped by godzirra. Take the AT Garage for example. I post about how my car makes me want to kill people and everyone always does their best to convince me that killing others is wrong and that suicide is the answer. That's the power of positive thinking.

Ya, I'm thinking when it's in the same week, common sense would say too soon.

RAPE IS NOT FUNNY. But rape jokes are hilarious. Dickwolves are pretty sweet too.

It's the worst when you make some kind of rape remark (my city football team got raped last night) in public then find out one of the people who heard it actually was raped as some point. The time I referred to a bad shot in pool as "an abortion of a shot" in front of someone who I didn't know had an abortion came in close second.

Meh...unless she was forced to have an unwanted abortion, she doesn't get any special treatment. While it shouldn't be a thing to be proud of, it's a self-inflicted thing...unlike MOST rapes. (and they're rarely "self inflicted," but may not have been rape until the next day...when the check bounced.) :p

Sorry but there is no such thing as too soon, and that was hilarious anyway...

I dont get why people think its "wrong" to joke about tragedies or whatever, I mean, its not like youre laughing at Japan "LOLOL THEY GOT PWNED BY TSUNAMI"

And like someone said above, its not too soon, its the perfect time because its still fresh

I was raised to never say something behind somebodies back I wouldn't tell them to their face. It reeks of being a pussy when one does that.
