Received this email this morning:

Giganews is pleased to announce the addition of a new server cluster
dedicated to bringing you the best Usenet experience available.

The new server cluster brings you:

- Bonus downloads! You will be able to download 50% more off of
our new server cluster. Here is how it will work for you:

If your account is... You can download...
6 gigabytes/mo 9 gigabytes/mo
8 gigabytes/mo 12 gigabytes/mo
12 gigabytes/mo 18 gigabytes/mo
16 gigabytes/mo 24 gigabytes/mo
25 gigabytes/mo 37.5 gigabytes/mo
50 gigabytes/mo 75 gigabytes/mo

Note that the bonus downloads are available only on the new
server cluster. You can track your actual and billed usage
using our online control panels.

- The same articles and the same retention as our other servers!
The servers are 100% compatible with our existing cluster so
can switch between the existing servers and the new one without
losing a single article.

- Another alternative in obtaining the fastest downloads possible!
Giganews is dedicated to bringing you the best of Usenet, and
that includes providing you with as many varieties of connections
as possible.

Switching to the new cluster is quite easy. The new cluster address is:

news-50.giganews.com

Just enter news-50.giganews.com in your news reader's setup to take
advantage of the bonus downloads. Remember, the new setup is 100%
backwards compatible so article numbers will be the same as those
on our other existing servers. You will not need to download new
headers to use the new server!

We are looking forward to even more service upgrades in the near
future, to keep your Giganews service the best available.

Thanks for choosing Giganews as your news provider!

Uh, I don't know about Usenetserver.com, but Newsfeeds' completeness sucks...

The new "bonus" Giganews server is slooooow. Could it be that too many people are using it?

For $11.00 or so I get 9 gigs monthly from Giganews. Its one of the best in providing complete posts. I have downloaded quite a bit on the new server - not slow for my cable connection. I'm quite happy with the additional 3 gigs.;)

Heh - Cox HSI gives me 99% of the postings I want so long as I'm quick to DL them - retention rates tank incredibly fast, but it's included with my cable bill. :)

Easynews has them all beat in speed, completeness, and retention.
I should know; I've used all of them. :)

Easynews even cleared out your downloads in middle december, I had about 5 Gigs downloaded and they set it back to 0, I got 9 more days to download another 6 gigs. :)
How much does giga news run?

Why do you need so much Usenet bandwidth, anyway? Oh, I see, your Divx collection hasn't reached 200 GB yet :)

9.98 for 6 gigs at easynews, retention is 30+ days. I think you also get an email address, wahoo. :)
Giganews rates are:
Giganews Broadband 1 GB/month US$ 7.95
Giganews Broadband 6 GB/month US$11.95
Giganews Broadband 8 GB/month US$15.95
Giganews Broadband 12 GB/month US$22.95
Giganews Broadband 16 GB/month US$29.95
Giganews Broadband 25 GB/month US$44.95
Giganews Broadband 50 GB/month US$79.95
1.25 TB retention. that seems little low.

Here's an explination for the "free" downloads taken from the Giganews general newsgroup:

All Giganews server aliases feed into the exact same server farm.
news-50 just specifies a TCP/IP routing, in this case through
Cogent.net.

Cogent is a "troubled" ISP and backbone provider. A critical peering
connection between Cogent and AOL has has just been switched off by
AOL becaus of a financial dispute. This has hurt Cogent's network
congestion badly enough that they may lose enough customers to go
bankrupt. Their customers include many schools and other institutions
in the Washington DC area.

I'd guess Giganews has been able to cut some red-hot deal with Cogent
for cheap bandwidth because of Cogent's troubles. So they decided to
pass it on. Actually not a bad marketing move IMO since Giganews is
the most expensive server on the planet.

My path to news-50 goes through Sprint from San Jose to San Francisco,
then Cogent across the country. As I type, I am downloading binaries
at 3.5 to 4 Mbits/sec using 7 connections. That's every bit as fast as
the full-price Giganews routing aliases. So for me this is a great
offer and much appreciated.
