Gigafast 5-Port 10/100 Switch $3.77 AR w/ Free Shipping

gigafast makes nice switches. Also wireless is not necesarly the best, some of us still use trusty etherneting 😉

what is the difference between a hub and a switch? Right now I have a 4 port wireless router, but im out of room on it. Could I use router/switch in addition to give internet access to more than just the original 4 computers instead of a router/hub?

A switch is a smart hub, in terms of functionality, they are the same.

And yes, most of the time you can connect the uplink port of your switch to the router's swtich, and share the internet out.

Hummmmmm

Ya might want to look that up.

Anyone know if this switch has a fan? My old Intel switch does and I'm looking to replace it for that reason.

switch: "someone from this port requested this packet"

hub: "hay ports, here's a damn packet, you all sort it out"

a hub broadcasts the packets to all the ports... so the computer has to inspect the packet header and be like, "hey this isn't mine"
a switch happily directs the packet to the right place 🙂

switch = better

In addition, "on-order" disqualifies this item for free shipping. Standard shipping to CA. is ~$7.50 Hope it comes back in stock soon. Been looking for one of these.

I am no expert, but I have heard that for low traffic situations (home use) the overhead of decision making by a hub can slow packets down more than the overhead of the nic throwing out unwanted packets. Of course YMMV.

IN STOCK, looks like a good deal, but note the rebate goes to new rochelle, NY (people seem to have problems with them and their COMPUSA rebates)

Hubs dont make any decisions - they are dumb - they simply broadcast out traffic received to all other ports (except the one that the traffic came in on). Switches are smarter - they do forward based on mac address. If you meant to say that switches are slower than hubs in low traffic situations then I would strongly disagree. At this point the only time I would recommend a hub is if you need every port to see all traffic (e.g. you want to sniff the traffic from the other ports) otherwise everyone should be using switches. My 2 cents...

Hmm..I got the free shipping option. (14-21 days) I just hope the thing gets here so I can send away for the rebate before the deadline.

The free shipping option was quite fast for me. They used FedEx Ground, and my switch arrived the same day I got the "Your order has shipped" email.
