gigabyte z170n boot problem.

Hi guys,
I bought the following:
z170n gaming 5 mobo
i7 6700k
crucial ballistix 2x4gb(2400mhz)
samsung sm951 512gb
to work with old parts:
corsair h90
silverstone 750w strider gold

I have temporarily put up the system by installing cpu, cooler, ssd and ram sticks. when i press the power button the system powers up the red led on the motherboard glows solid for a few seconds. no display through hdmi and then the system shuts off and powers ups for 2-3 seconds and loops after that. i have downloaded the latest bios update but am not sure how to install it. the instructions here are not very clear to me.
any suggestions are welcome.

If you have another type of mass storage device, try without the M.2 SSD installed and only a single memory stick.
Or maybe even: without the video card installed & just use the onboard Intel video.
Once you're able to access the UEFI setup (without the system crashing), then you can consider flash updating the bios to the latest version.

I have 2.5" hdd(laptop) I will try that. I have already tried all 4(I was planning to get matx mobo earlier) sticks of ram I have in both slots. Issue is that it is not giving any beeps even when there is no ram installed. I have also read that skylake motherboards have problem when 3pin CPU pump headers are installed. Don't know how to go around that. I do have Silverstone's pwm fan splitter box.

Don't rule out trying a cmos reset to see if that will clear things up.

I have already shot the 2 cmos_clr pins. I will try removing the battery for a few seconds and try.

I am using old back plate of my h90. The soft(double-sided sticky) pad worn out when I removed them from my last mobo so I took normal double-sided tape and made new pads. I can see the backplate touching the mobo tray of the cabinet.. Can that cause a shorting ??

Also I have noticed that after initial try(for a few seconds) the system keeps powering up for second or half a second (very inconsistent)

I read somewhere that someone let this happen for sometime and the system eventually boot up but I am afraid that the problem is related to power and if I let it do this longer I might damage components beyond repair.

I had to flash to the latest firmware on my GA-z170X-HD3 due to issues I had with games crashing to desktop. You have to get the firmware file and then install it using Gigabytes BIOS flash utility.

The system is not POSTing. No output, not even a logo. And it powers for about 5-10 seconds I don't think it will be enough.

After removing the CPU I can see a bent pin. I don't understand how that can happen. I didn't check when I opened the mobo box for the 1st time and I installed the CPU without hiccups (1st try)

Is it possible that the mobo came with a bent pin? Anyways, my chances of RMA are gone imo. Totally screwed .

I will try to take a clear pic of the pin so that some of you(at least) can suggest a way. Watching YouTube bids on the topic in the meantime.

Edit: I tried bending the pin back to its place using a sewing pin. Used the loop (for thread) to hold the pin and moved it back to the alignment of other pins.

The system booted into my old hdd with windows but couldn't go past Preparing devices.

Now I am sh** scared to put the mobo in the case.

Do you have a valid Windows license? If you have access to another system you can burn Windows 8 or 10 ISO to a USB thumb drive and reinstall it that way. I'm pretty sure you'll need a working Windows partition to run the BIOS update.

That's could be your problem source. The original heat sink interface material should be replaced with Arctic Silver or other type of product specifically designed for the purpose; not some "double-sided tape".
As for the bent CPU pin: try using the emptied end of a mechanical pencil, as a straightening tool.

I used small sewing needle to straighten up the pin and upon installing the h90 the system is booting. With my old hdd it went to a screen where windows installer got stuck at 'preparing device'. After 15 odd minutes I powered down the system by a long-press of the power button. Now after i installed the Samsung sm951(along with hdd) it is not getting into booting. It flashes logo and then goes to a screen saying 'install a proper boot device and press a button'

Update: The bent pin was the problem after all. Everything works now(main hardware) haven't installed secondary stuff like wifi, sound drivers etc etc.

Installed win 10 on sm951 without problem, updated bios everything is going fine so far. Will add secondary drives and see if things stay smooth.
